2.1.1 the facilitation of learning which<br />

includes such matters as:<br />

a) helping to establish learning<br />

situations appropriate to the<br />

needs, abilities and potential of<br />

the individual student;<br />

b) enabling the diagnosis and<br />

alleviation of specific learning<br />

difficulties;<br />

c) motivating and directing<br />

learning experiences; and<br />

d) developing and maintaining<br />

skills and abilities;<br />

2.1.2 the certification of the level of<br />

achievement which students have<br />

reached in subjects and/or courses at<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> University of<br />

Technology;<br />

2.1.3 assistance with the evaluation and<br />

review of program content and<br />

.. .<br />

objectives;<br />

2.1.4 assistance with the evaluation and<br />

review of methods of instruction.<br />

3. Forms of assessment<br />

Without limiting the generality hereof, assessment of<br />

students enrolled in a subject may be undertaken<br />

using - any - one or more of the following:<br />

3.1 examination at the conclusion of the subject;<br />

3.2 formal or informal tests conducted at any<br />

time from the commencement of the subject<br />

to the end of the examination period;<br />

3.3 assignment, project work, field work, essay,<br />

report or such other activities as the subject<br />

panel shall require.<br />

4. Retention of assessed work<br />

The Head of School shall arrange for the retention of all<br />

final examination scripts and any other assessed material<br />

which is not normally returned to students for a period of<br />

not less than six calendar months after the publication of<br />

results. After this material may be destroyed in<br />

accordance with Public Records Office procedures.<br />

5. Confidentiality<br />

All results, and decisions associated with dealings relating to<br />

examination/assessment irregularities, and any appeals<br />

arising, are confidential. Where such alleged breaches or<br />

irregularities are dismissed, all documentation shall be<br />

destroyed.<br />

6. Verification of documents<br />

The uttering of forged or false documents or statements in<br />

support of any claim under the assessment procedures shall<br />

be deemed to be a breach of the procedures.<br />

7. Subject panels<br />

7.1 For each subject for which a result is<br />

required there shall be a subject panel<br />

(hereafter called the panel) comprising at<br />

least two members of the academic staff of<br />

the <strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> teaching divisions of<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> University of Technology.<br />

7.2 The panel and Subject Convener shall be<br />

appointed by the Head of the teaching School<br />

not later than the end of the second week of<br />

the semester in which teaching of the subject<br />

commences for that particular year.<br />

7.3 For subjects where the awarding Division is<br />

not also the teaching Division, the Pro Vice-<br />

Chancellor of the awarding Division, or<br />

Head of the awarding School, may nominate<br />

one person to each such panel.<br />

7.4 The names of the subject panel members<br />

shall be reported to the teaching and<br />

awarding Divisional Boards for noting, in<br />

the case of subjects commencing in the first<br />

semester, no later than the April meeting of<br />

the Divisional Boards and, in the case of<br />

subjects commencing in the second semester,<br />

no later than the August meeting of the<br />

Divisional Boards.<br />

7.5 The panel shall, subject to these procedures:<br />

7.5.1 determine, no later than the end of<br />

the second week of teaching, the<br />

form or forms of assessment to be<br />

used;<br />

7.5.2 determine the assessment categories<br />

to be used for the particular semester<br />

or year;<br />

7.5.3 ensure that each ~anel member and<br />

each person teaching the subject is<br />

familiar with the content and<br />

objectives of the subject;<br />

7.5.4 determine the minimum standards<br />

which a student must reach or<br />

specific work which a student must<br />

complete in order to be notified to a<br />

Divisional Board as a passing<br />

candidate in the subject;<br />

7.5.5 ensure that a written statement of<br />

the requirements of assessment is<br />

prepared and circulated for all<br />

students enrolled in and attending<br />

the subject, no later than the end of<br />

the second week of teaching This<br />

statement should comply with the<br />

Guidelines for the Prtparation of a<br />

Subject Handout and include:<br />

Teaching Method:<br />

the number of hours of lectures,<br />

tutorials, laboratories, etc. per<br />

week:attendance requirements<br />

(if any);<br />

workshopAaboratory/tutoriai<br />

preparation requirements (if any);<br />

statement of worksho~/<br />

laboratory/tutorial safety
