Objectives<br />

To enable students to become proficient in the areas of<br />

traffic engineering, flexible pavement design, and road<br />

geometry.<br />

Content<br />

Theory<br />

Traffic engineering design, analysis and presentation of<br />

results for traffic surveys. Design of at-grade intersections.<br />

Flexible pavements principles, mechanistic modelling, and<br />

structural design. Design of sprayed seal, design of asphalt<br />

mixes, reseal design.<br />

Road geometry speed parameters, sight distance, horizontal<br />

transition curves, vertical Curves, auxiliary lanes, overtaking<br />

provision.<br />

Practical work and field experience<br />

One traffic survey and its analysis.<br />

Computer analysis of pavement performance.<br />

CE470 Services<br />

This is a fourth year subject in the Bachelor of Technology<br />

Content<br />

This subject deals with specialist services encountered in<br />

commercial and office buildings.<br />

The following services are covered: air-conditioning, fire<br />

sprinklers, electrical services, specialist services, vertical<br />

systems lifts and escalators. And in the area of drainage<br />

hydrology surface and subsurface drainage elements of<br />

hydrology, applications to roof and site drainage.<br />

Groundwater. Hydraulics of pressure conduits total energy<br />

line, hydrants hydraulic grade line, energy components,<br />

graphical representation, . . pipe friction formulas, minor<br />

losses, pump selection.<br />

aggregate and sand plant, concreting plant, delivery<br />

systems, site inspection and quality control, formwork,<br />

curing, cold and hot weather concreting, shotcrete,<br />

precast concrete.<br />

Foundation construction dewatering, ground anchors,<br />

underpinning and shoring, footing and slab<br />

construction.<br />

Bridge construction methods for reinforced and<br />
