Content<br />

This subject introduces the student to the classification,<br />

structure and properties of plastics; the processing,<br />

fabrication, fastening and decoration of plastic components;<br />

testing and inspection techniques used to determine the<br />

properties of plastic materials; introduction to more<br />

advanced materials such as ceramics, composites, and<br />

adhesives; the design for manufacture of moulded plastic and<br />

composite components.<br />

Electronics<br />

Objectives<br />

To introduce basic concepts of electric and electronic<br />

circuitry and give an appreciation of the industry and<br />

construction methods related to product design.<br />

Content<br />

This subject will introduce basic concepts of electrical and<br />

electronic theory and practice. Through discussion and<br />

practical sessions, students will gain an appreciation of<br />

printed circuit board design, construction, component<br />

layout and product design, commercial componentry and<br />

technical manuals.<br />

Electric and electronic standards will be covered to outline<br />

their effect on component selection and design considerations.<br />

Ergonomics<br />

Objectives<br />

To introduce students to the wide range of factors affecting<br />

the relationship between people and their working<br />

environment by evaluating human capabilities and<br />

limitations and how the application of ergonomic principles<br />

and data can be applied to optimise design, performance and<br />

wellbeing of the user.<br />

Content<br />

Topics include an introduction to the philosophy of<br />

ergonomics, its principles and disciplines; learning the<br />

anatomical, physiological and anthropometric capabilities<br />

and limitations of the human body; gaining an<br />

understanding of the bio-mechanics of the human body;<br />

evaluating and analysing human performance; engineering<br />

psychology and human behavioural characteristics;<br />

ergonomic product and workplace design; the environmental<br />

factors which effect human performance; human information<br />

processing characteristic; the design of controls and displays<br />

for compatibility with human needs and expectations;<br />

system design and task analysis; occupational health and<br />

safety, risk engineering, control and prevention.<br />

Objectives<br />

This subject introduces the principles and practices of<br />

technical writing with respect to reports, manuals and other<br />

industry related documentation.<br />

Content<br />

This subject will cover the nature and basic rules of<br />

communication as appropriate to the designer. Other topics<br />

will include the fundamentals of style, reader based writing,<br />

report writing, submissions and briefs, graphics and desktop<br />

publishing, documentation blueprints, drafting, editing,<br />

production and distribution of documentation.<br />

Product Critiques 1<br />

Objectives<br />

To increase the students' analytical skills with rational<br />

objectivity.<br />

Content<br />

Case studies, seminars, discussion, deconstruction or<br />

reconstruction and analysis of design will examine such<br />

areas as:<br />

their own and others' work<br />

aesthetic rationale<br />

Objectives<br />

To introduce the potential of the computer as a design and<br />

drafting tool, and to develop the students expertise in the<br />

use of CAD for the production of engineering drawings.<br />

Content<br />

Introduction to the operation of a PC based computer-aided<br />

design laboratory, its equipment and software. Through<br />

demonstration and practical work the student will learn the<br />

operating system and commands necessary to produce hard<br />

copy engineering drawings using the CAD system.<br />
