Objectives and Content<br />

This subject follows on from Counselling Theory and Skills.<br />

It aims to introduce students, in a workshop context, to<br />

important topics in counselling psycholog; practice in<br />

preparation for students' supervised practica and subsequent<br />

independent practice.<br />

Topics include:<br />

application of counselling techniques to selected clientproblems<br />

e.g. depression, anxiety, anger, interpersonalskill<br />

deficits, decision-making, crisis counselling,<br />

substance abuse: post-traumatic stress. rehabilitation,<br />

marital and fam~ly conflict, child abuse.<br />

Other issues that may be covered include:<br />

cross cultural issues in counselling; -<br />

special issues in client Assessment: level of risk of suicidal<br />

or violent behaviour, physical illness; DSM-III-R;<br />

record-keeping . and referral;<br />

supervision models of supervision, supervision skills;<br />

consultation;<br />

Assessment Assessment: students will be evaluated by the<br />

supervisor() most directly associated with their work together<br />

with the coordinator. Perfomnce will be reviewed mid-way<br />

through the intmship and an evaluation made at the end.<br />

A subject in the Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

This first practicum is concerned primarily with helping<br />

students to make the transition from the counselling<br />

laboratory to the counselling practice setting. Initially, new<br />

students will be allocated clients at the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Centre<br />

for Psychological Services. In addition, students will<br />

~artici~ate in the administration of the Centre and in<br />

dealing with telephone enquiries to the Centre.<br />

Students will be allocated clients in accordance with their<br />

own existing levels of counselling skills, their professional<br />

skills, their professional interests. A normal case load will be<br />

three clients per week. Students will be expected to see a<br />

mixture of child, adolescent and adult clients and to gather<br />

experience in working with groups and families as well as<br />

individuals. A supervisor will be appointed for each client or<br />

familv seen bv the student and will meet weeklv with the<br />

student for supervision. The supervisor will be an Associate<br />

of the Centre.<br />

Students will meet once a month in a small group<br />

supervision session to discuss their clients. Each student will<br />

be required to present a report on a case for discussion by<br />

the group. In addition, each student will write a<br />

comprehensive case summary after termination with each<br />

client.<br />

AY61 0 Professional and Ethical Issues<br />

3 hours per week Hawthorn Prerequisite: nil<br />

Assessment: case study 30% practical and theoretical<br />

examination 70%<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

This course is designed to ensure that students understand<br />

the ethical and legal responsibilities of psychologists<br />

working in the human services. Through study of the ethical<br />

standards of the profession, and legal issues related to the<br />

practice of psychology, students will learn about the process<br />

of ethical and professional decision making.<br />

Topics covered will include the regulation of psychological<br />

practice through professional associations and registration<br />

boards, the influence of values on ethical practice,<br />

limitations on confidentiality, who is the client, report<br />

writing, dual role relationships, psychology and the law.
