Obiectives<br />

To introduce three dimensional computer modelling and its<br />

relationship to computer aided manufacture.<br />

Content<br />

Students will be introduced to the User Co-ordinate System,<br />

3D co-ordinate entry, model space and paper space, 3D<br />

displays and dynamic views, wireframe modelling, surface<br />

modelling, and solid modelling. The use of Autolisp, in<br />

particular its use in setting up the three dimensional<br />

modelling . . space, and some rendering and animation, will<br />

also be covered.<br />

ID405 Design History 2B<br />

Content<br />

Second semester begins with abstract expression, then<br />

considers questions of national identity and Australian<br />

culture in the '50s and '60s, moves to assem.blage, pop,<br />

performance art and earthworks, explores the 1960s/70s<br />

critique of high modernism and the shift to post-modernist<br />

values in painting, design and architecture.<br />

ID501 Industrial Design 5<br />

4, ID404 CAD/CAM Studies, ID403 Profesional Studies 2,'<br />

ID405 Design History 2B Assessment: continuous<br />

A third year subject in the Bachelor of Design (Industrial<br />

Design)<br />

Objectives<br />

To develop independent decision making and an holistic<br />

appreciation of the role of the designer.<br />

Content<br />

Projects will be designed specifically to introduce complex<br />

issues which will challenge the student to investigate beyond<br />

the literal translation of the brief and begin to dissect the<br />

brief. Through the application of skills already learned and<br />

the confidence gained through previous practical and<br />

theoretical work, the student will be encouraged to expand<br />

their understanding of the development of ideas and apply<br />

their skills to assigned projects. The student will be expected<br />

to present concise information supported by researched<br />

material relevant to the project and to develop ideas from a<br />

rational research base. The use of models to demonstrate the<br />

concept will be required.<br />

ID502 Technology 5<br />

Objectives<br />

To provide an insight into the expectations and demands<br />

placed on the practising designer in industry and business.<br />

Content<br />

This subject will develop an understanding of design<br />

management including the setting up and management of a<br />

design office. Topics to be covered include basic accounting<br />

and financial planning, business planning, quotation and fee<br />

structuring, business communications, professional<br />

association and ethics in design.<br />

ID505 Art and Design Culture 1 A<br />

7.5 credit points 3 hours per week Prahran<br />

Design)<br />

Content<br />

This subject is designed to respond to events attended and<br />

discussed in class.<br />

The subject seeks to build on History of Arts 1 and 2 but<br />

branches into more philosophical issues and concentrates on<br />

the critique of culture. Issues looked at include design as<br />

commodity culture, the interpretation of design/theories<br />

and definitions of design, new musicological and shopping<br />

culture, postmodern positions on taste, style and space, and<br />

the necessity of an Australian design culture.
