School (SGRS)<br />

The mission of the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Graduate Research School<br />

and the Office of Research and Graduate Studies is to<br />

promote and coordinate research and development<br />

activities by <strong>Swinburne</strong> staff and postgraduate students. It<br />

provides a University-wide<br />

on research at the<br />

University. There are several key service areas for staff and<br />

School<br />

The School exists to provide a University-wide point of<br />

contact and communication for all postgraduate research<br />

students, to coordinate research services, and to ensure<br />

quality in research training.<br />

The School runs regular seminars and workshops to assist<br />

staff and students to develop their research skills. It also<br />

offers induction programs for new researchers and<br />

postgraduates, offers advice on resources and provides a<br />

focus for interaction and development. The School is<br />

managed by the Office of Research and Graduate Studies.<br />

Doctoral study and scholarships<br />

The SGRS is responsible for the administration of PhD<br />

degrees and coordination of other research studies. It<br />

provides prospective doctoral students with a variety of<br />

information on doctoral study including: details about<br />

admissions to candidature; expected duration of<br />

candidature; progress report requirements; HECS<br />

exemption; scholarships; guidelines for thesis presentation;<br />

guidelines for supervision; and University policies on<br />

research. The School also provides information,<br />

application forms and guidelines for a number of<br />

Australian scholarships for doctoral and research Masters<br />

degrees. Information is also available on other scholarships<br />

offered by non-profit organisations, and on overseas<br />

scholarship opportunities.<br />

Office of Research and<br />

Graduate Studies<br />

The Office provides advice on University policies for the<br />

conduct of research and the implementation of<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong>'s Research Management Plan. It also publishes<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong>'s annual Research Repo~, which provides an<br />

overview of the University's major research centres,<br />

research interests of staff, and details of current research<br />

projects.<br />

The Office administers research grants and contracts across<br />

the University, ethics committee approvals and intellectual<br />

property issues.<br />

External organisations seeking advice on <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s<br />

research capabilities should contact the Office on 92145223.<br />

The Office provides information on research grants and<br />

other opportunities for research funding, as well as details<br />

of programs where graduates are employed specifically by<br />

an organisation to conduct research. A weekly up-date<br />

detailing current opportunities is distributed widely<br />

around the University.<br />

International Student Unit<br />

The International Student Unit was established to provide<br />

a focal point for <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s international activities.<br />

This includes being responsible for a11 matters relating to<br />

the implementation of <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s international program.<br />

All enquiries for study at <strong>Swinburne</strong> by non-residents of<br />

Australia should be directed to the Unit to ensure that<br />

Australian government admission policies are followed.<br />

The coordination of ongoing welfare of overseas students<br />

is also a responsibility of the Unit.<br />

The Unit also operates a student hostel for international<br />

and Australian students.
