Divisional administrative staff should ensure<br />

that:<br />

6.2.4 The student has been advised of the internal<br />

administrative procedures for the processing<br />

of applications.<br />

6.3 Schools<br />

School Heads or Committees are expected to ensure<br />

that:<br />

The research will be conducted in the<br />

appropriate School or combination of<br />

Schools and, if relevant, the appropriate<br />

industrial or government body.<br />

The proposed project is feasible in terms of<br />

time, facilities, equipment, technical and<br />

resource staff, source material and funding<br />

for the expected duration of the research<br />

required for the degree of PhD. (See Statute,<br />

Section 3.4.)<br />

The student is aware of the range of research<br />

exoertise of academic staff.<br />

Proposed supervisors are sufficiently expert<br />

in the area of research and have the time and<br />

commitment to be able to offer the student<br />

proper supervision.<br />

Proper supervision can be maintained<br />

throughout the project period.<br />

The student is aware of departmental<br />

expectations, practices and standards with<br />

respect to supervised research.<br />

The student is aware of the nature of<br />

facilities available for postgraduates,<br />

including library services.<br />

Students are encouraged to participate in<br />

research seminars in order to develop skills<br />

at presenting their work and opportunities<br />

are provided for them to become an integral<br />

part of the research milieu of the department<br />

and the disci~line.<br />

Staff are given the opportunity to gain<br />

supervisory experience as co-supervisors.<br />

Statute for the degree of<br />

Master (by research)<br />

1. Definitions<br />

In this statute:<br />

Council means the Council of <strong>Swinburne</strong> University of<br />

Technology;<br />

Univwsity means <strong>Swinburne</strong> University of Technology;<br />

Divisional Board means the sub-committee of the<br />

University's Academic Board called the 'Divisional Board<br />

(or any authorised sub-committee thereof) which is<br />

responsible for studies being undertaken in the area;<br />

Head of School means the person appointed Head of School<br />

in a <strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> Division and responsible for studies<br />

on the particular discipline.<br />

2. Title of degree<br />

The degree of Master may be awarded in a field of study of<br />

any division of the University. Degrees shall be designated<br />

as follows:<br />

Master of Applied Science MAppSc<br />

Master of Arts<br />

MA<br />

Master of Business<br />

MBus<br />

Master of Design<br />

MDes<br />

Master of Engineering MEng<br />

3. Grading of degree<br />

The degree of Master shall be awarded in one grade only.<br />

4. Admission to candidature<br />

4.1 Entry requirements<br />

A person wishing to be admitted to<br />

candidature shall have:<br />

4.1.1 qualified, at a sufficiently<br />

meritorious standard, for a degree of<br />

the University (in a field relevant to<br />

the work proposed) or such other<br />

degree as the Divisional Board may<br />

deem equivalent for this purpose; or<br />

4.1.2 qualified for an award judged by the<br />

Divisional Board to be of relevant<br />

character and appropriate standard;<br />

and have experience which the<br />

Divisional Board deems to be a<br />

suitable preparation for the<br />

applicants proposed field of study.<br />

4.2 Application<br />

No application for admission to<br />

candidature may be approved by the<br />

Divisional Board except with the support<br />

of the Head of School.<br />

4.3 Supervision and facilities<br />

An applicant shall be admitted to<br />

candidature only if the Divisional Board is<br />

satisfied that the proposed program is a<br />

suitable study in the discipline or area<br />

concerned and that adequate facilities and<br />

supervision are available.<br />

5. Program<br />

The candidate shall carry out a program of research,<br />

investigation or development involving the<br />

submission of a major thesis embodying the results of<br />

that program carried out during the period of<br />

candidature in:<br />

5.1 a school or other recognised unit of the<br />

University, OR<br />

5.2 industrial, commercial, governmental,<br />

educational or research organisations<br />

approved by the Divisional Board, or<br />

5.3 a combination of 5.1 and 5.2.
