Student-at-risk program<br />

Students who do not pass at least fifty per cent of their<br />

enrolled load in any semester will be identified as being 'at<br />

risk' and will be advised of their status by letter within one<br />

week of the publication of results each semester. Students<br />

will be given the opportunity to discuss the situation with<br />

a member of the Student Progress Review Committee.<br />

Attendance at these sessions is highly recommended, but<br />

not compulsory.<br />

The grades N, NA, NWD and PX will count as fail grades<br />

for the purpose of this section.<br />

Unsatisfactory academic<br />

progress<br />

The academic progress of a student will be considered to be<br />

c unsatisfactory if:<br />

in the two most recent semesters in which the student<br />

was enrolled (excluding summer school), the student<br />

fails at least fifty per cent of the workload; or<br />

a Bachelor of Business student fails a mandatory<br />

subject for the third time, or a Bachelor of Arts<br />

student fails a mandatory subject for a second time<br />

(mandatory subjects are those specific subjects required<br />

to be completed for the completion of the degree); or<br />

the student fails to meet the conditions previously<br />

imposed by the Progress Review Committee.<br />

The grades N, NA, NWD and PX will count as a fail for<br />

C?.: the purpose of this section.<br />

Show cause applications<br />

V)<br />

0 Students whose progress is considered unsatisfactory will<br />

be advised in writing of their status within one week of<br />

g results being released, and advised that a recommendation<br />

has been made that they should be excluded from the<br />

P<br />

g course in which they are enrolled. Such students are<br />

entitled to make a show cause application to the Student<br />

Progress Review Committee stating why they should not<br />

be excluded. No student will be excluded from the course<br />

without first being given the opportunity to show cause to<br />

the Student Progress Review Committee. Failure to make<br />

contact with the Committee will result in the exclusion of<br />

the student before the beginning of the next academic<br />

period.<br />

Show cause applications must be addressed to the Chair of<br />

the Student Progress Review Committee and lodged at the<br />

Divisional Office bv the date s~ecified in the letter to<br />

students advising them of their status.<br />

Committee<br />

Composition<br />

There will be one committee for the Bachelor of Arts and<br />

one committee for the Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of<br />

ArtdBachelor of Business and Bachelor of Information<br />

Technology made up of academic staff teaching in the<br />

relevant course or courses.<br />

Chair and at least three members, all from academic<br />

staff teaching in the relevant courses. The Chairs are<br />

nominated by the Divisional Board and members are<br />

nominated by Heads of School.<br />

The Division's International Student Liaison Officer<br />

for cases of show cause involving international<br />

students.<br />

The relevant Course Administrator (Secretary).<br />

Where requested by the student, the President of the<br />

Student Union or nominee may be present at the<br />

Committee for the consideration of that case only.<br />

Procedure<br />

Upon receipt of a show cause application from a student,<br />

the Chair and Secretary of the Student Progress Review<br />

Committee, on behalf of the Committee, will review the case<br />

and decide whether it will be necessary to interview the<br />

student.<br />

Additional information from appropriate academic staff about<br />

the student's academic work may be sought by the Student<br />

Progress Review Committee before a decision is made.<br />

Students will be advised in writing whether their show<br />

cause application has been accepted without interview or<br />

whether an interview with the Student Progress Review<br />

Committee is required.<br />

Powers<br />

The Student Progress Review Committee may, when<br />

considering a show cause application:<br />

accept the student's show cause application and allow<br />

the student to re-enrol without condition;<br />

accept the student's show cause application but place<br />

conditions upon the student's enrolment in the<br />

following semester;<br />

in the case of a Bachelor of Arts student who fails a<br />

mandatory subject for the second time, the Committee<br />

may require the student to select another major course<br />

of study;<br />

require the student to take a leave of absence for a<br />

specified period; or<br />

exclude the student from the course for a minimum of<br />

two academic years.<br />

Enrolment conditions<br />

The academic record of students placed on condition will be<br />

reviewed by the Student Progress Review Committee at the<br />

end of the following semester and a decision made to:<br />

permit the student to continue studying without<br />

further condition; or<br />

impose a further condition on the student for an<br />

additional semester; or<br />

require the student to show cause why they should not<br />

be excluded from the course for a minimum of two<br />

academic years.
