In addition, a candidate may be required to undertake other<br />

formal studies as approved by the Divisional Board.<br />

6. Duration<br />

The candidate may undertake the program on a full-time<br />

or part-time basis. Excluding any periods of intermission as<br />

set out below, the duration of candidature shall be:<br />

6.1 for a candidate whose degree under 4.1.1 or<br />

whose award under 4.1.2 involved less than<br />

four years full-time study (or its pan-time<br />

equivalent): not less than twenty-one<br />

months and not, under normal<br />

circumstances, more than thirty-six months<br />

of full-time study;<br />

6.2 for a candidate whose degree under 4.1.1 or<br />

whose award under 4.1.2 involved not less<br />

than four years full-time study (or its parttime<br />

eauivalentl: not less than fifteen<br />

months and not, under normal<br />

circumstances, more than thirty-six months<br />

of full-time study;<br />

6.3 where a student undertakes the masters<br />

degree program (or any portion thereof), by<br />

part-time study, the maximum time shall<br />

normally be not more than seventy-two<br />

months.<br />

After taking advice from the supervisor(s) and the<br />

Head of School, the Divisional Board may grant a<br />

period of intermission of candidature on such<br />

conditions as the Divisional Board sees fit.<br />

7. Supervision<br />

For each candidate the Divisional Board shall appoint,<br />

on the recommendation of the Head of School, and on<br />

such terms and conditions as the Divisional Board<br />

determines, one or two supervisors, one of whom shall<br />

be a member of the academic staff of the University.<br />

If the program is carried out within the University, at<br />

least one supervisor shall be a member of the<br />

academic staff of the School in which the program is<br />

conducted.<br />

Where two supervisors are appointed one shall be<br />

designated the Coordinating Supervisor. The<br />

Coordinating Supervisor must be a member of the<br />

staff of the University. The Coordinating Supervisor<br />

shall have overall responsibility for the administrative<br />

conduct of programs. If for any reason a supervisor is<br />

unable effectively to supervise the candidate for a<br />

period exceeding three months, the Divisional Board<br />

shall, on the recommendation of the Head of School,<br />

appoint a replacement supervisor.<br />

8. Progress<br />

At the expiry of twelve months from the date of<br />

admission to candidature and at such other times as<br />

the Divisional Board may decide, the Divisional Board<br />

requires a report on the progress of each candidate.<br />

The report is prepared by the supervisor (or, where<br />

there is more than one supervisor, the Coordinating<br />

Supervisor). Prior to the preparation of the report the<br />

supervisor (or Coordinating Supervisor) will be<br />

required to interview the candidate. The candidate<br />

will be given access to the report and will have the<br />

opportunity to comment to the Divisional Board on<br />

the supervisors assessment of progress.<br />

Where the Divisional Board is of opinion that a<br />

candidates progress is not, primafacie, of a<br />

satisfactory level, a candidate may be required to show<br />

cause why candidature should not be terminated.<br />

Failure on the part of the candidate to demonstrate<br />

satisfactory progress may result in the Divisional<br />

Board terminating candidature.<br />

9. Thesis<br />

9.1 Three copies of the thesis shall be submitted<br />

to the Academic Registrar. At least two of<br />

the copies must be bound.<br />

9.2 The thesis must be typed one and a half<br />

spaced, in English on A4 size paper, and<br />

conform to any other specifications<br />

prescribed by the Divisional Board.<br />

9.3 One copy of the thesis shall, if passed by the<br />

Divisional Board, be lodged in the<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> Library, one shall be held by the<br />

School in which the work was done, and<br />

one shall be returned to the candidate.<br />

9.4 With the Divisional Board's prior approval a<br />

candidate may submit work other than in<br />

the form set out in 9.2 and 9.3.<br />

10. Examination<br />

The Divisional Board shall appoint on the<br />

recommendation of the Head of School and the<br />

Coordinating Supervisor, on such terms and<br />

conditions as the Divisional Board determines, at least<br />

two examiners in respect of each candidate's thesis.<br />

The candidate's supervisor shall not normally be<br />

appointed as an examiner. At least one examiner shall<br />

be external to the University.<br />

The name of the examiners shall not, without the<br />

approval of the Divisional Board, be disclosed to the<br />

candidate. Each examiner shall provide a report to the<br />

Divisional Board on the standard of the candidate's<br />

thesis and recommend one of the following courses of<br />

action:<br />

that the thesis be passed;<br />

that the thesis be passed subject to the<br />

inclusion of minor specified amendments;<br />

(c) that the thesis be returned to the candidate<br />

for major revision and re-submission within<br />

a specified period; or<br />
