Academic Board. The person so<br />

chosen shall be from a School<br />

other than that in which the<br />

student has been taught.<br />

Representation of both genders<br />

should be attempted wherever<br />

practicable and achievable.<br />

The Academic Registrar (or<br />

nominee) will attend and act as<br />

Secretary<br />

17.5.2 The student may submit any other<br />

written material to the Committee<br />

in support of their case. Any<br />

additional evidence so provided shall<br />

be copied to the other party or<br />

parties in the appeal.<br />

17.5.3 Progress Review Committees will<br />

provide details of the reasons for<br />

their decisions to the Exclusion<br />

Appeals Committees to enable the<br />

appeal to be heard more effectively.<br />

This should include Divisions - ---<br />

making available to appeals<br />

committees more detailed reports/<br />

marks and grades of student results<br />

in continuous assessment tasks and<br />

formal examinations in addition to<br />

final results and grades.<br />

17.5.4 The student and a representative of<br />

the Division separately must be<br />

given the opportunity to appear<br />

during the course of the hearing.<br />

17.5.5 The student must be given at least<br />

five working days' notice in advance<br />

of the date, time and place of the<br />

appeal hearing.<br />

17.5.6 Students invited to attend a meeting<br />

of the Committee, may be<br />

represented by an advocate who<br />

may not be a member of the Appeals<br />

Committee.<br />

17.5.7 The Exclusions Appeals Committee<br />

may:<br />

a) confirm the exclusion or<br />

condition in respect of which<br />

the application was made; or<br />

b) uphold the appeal and re-admit<br />

the student to the course from<br />

which the student was excluded;<br />

the Committee may, depending<br />

on the circumstances of the case,<br />

impose or modify conditions<br />

won the enrolment of the - -<br />

applicant to the University.<br />

17.6 Exclusions Appeals Procedure<br />

The Exclusions Appeals Committee will<br />

investigate the issue in the following<br />

manner.<br />

17.6.1 The Committee will meet within<br />

fifteen working days of the date the<br />

written appeal is lodged with the<br />

Academic Registrar. It will consider<br />

all written documentation including<br />

the written statements of the<br />

student, the report of the Progress<br />

Review Committee and the written<br />

statement of any witnesses.<br />

17.6.2 The Committee may call before it<br />

the student and other parties<br />

considered appropriate by the<br />

committee.<br />

17.6.3 The Committee must hear the<br />

matter on its merits, taking into<br />

account all the circumstances of the<br />

student's case.<br />

17.6.4 Committee decisions should be<br />

reached by a majority vote.<br />

17.7 The student shall be informed in writing of<br />

the decision and reason for the decision of<br />

the Exclusions Appeals Committee. Such<br />

written advice shall be mailed to the<br />

student's semester address shown in the<br />

University's records, within five working<br />

days of the Committee's decision being<br />

made. Copies shall also be provided to the<br />

staff member, the teaching and awarding<br />

Division involved, and other committee<br />

members as appropriate within five working<br />

days of the Committee's decision.<br />

17.8 No further appeal against any decision of<br />

the Assessment Appeals Committee is<br />

possible to any officer of or body within the<br />

University.<br />

18. Procedures for other academic issues<br />

18.1 Where a student has an issue other than<br />

about an assessment grade or an exclusion<br />

there should be an initial contact with the<br />

relevant staff member at a level consistent to<br />

the complaint. In the case where the issue<br />

involves a member of staff, discussion<br />

should be held with the Head of School. In<br />

the case where the issue involves the Head<br />

of School, the School or the Division,<br />

discussions should be held with the Pro<br />

Vice-Chancellor. Wherever possible issues<br />

should be dealt with informally.<br />

18.2 If no resolution is reached the student shall<br />

make a written submission to the Head of<br />

School briefly outlining the case.<br />

18.3 If the Head of School is the subject of or<br />

associated with the matter, or where the<br />

matter concerns the School itself, the<br />

student may submit a case to the Pro Vice-<br />

Chancellor of the Division.
