" NOOI Doctor of Philosophy (Business)<br />

The Division offers the degree of Doctor of Philosophy on<br />

a full-time or part-time basis. Applicants should have a<br />

Master degree or the equivalent in a discipline appropriate<br />

to the proposed area of study. The level of academic<br />

achievement in prior studies should be of a very high<br />

standard. Other relevant activities, including work<br />

experience, will be taken into account in assessing<br />

applications.<br />

Intending applicants should approach the Research<br />

Coordinator, or the Executive Officer, of the School in<br />

which they intend to undertake their studies. The Research<br />

Coordinator will refer the applicant to the appropriate<br />

member(s) of staff who may act as supervisor(s) for the<br />

degree. Formal applications for candidature, bearing the<br />

signatures of the supervisors and the Head of School, are<br />

considered by the Divisional Research Committee and the<br />

University <strong>Higher</strong> Degrees Committee. A candidate may<br />

be required to undertake preliminary coursework as part of<br />

the candidature.<br />

The Statute for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy<br />

(page 567) sets out the regulations governing this<br />

qualification.<br />

Scholarships<br />

<strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> Contribution Scheme<br />

(HECS) exemption<br />

Full-time higher degree students will normally receive a<br />

HECS exemption scholarship.<br />

Australian Postgraduate Research Award<br />

The Australian Research Council (ARC) offers 900<br />

Australian Postgraduate Research Awards (APRAs) per<br />

year to postgraduate researchers of exceptional promise.<br />

Industry Sponsored Scholarships<br />

The Division of Business, Humanities and Social Science<br />

has been fortunate to obtain a number of scholarships from<br />

industry for which its higher degree students can apply.<br />

Division Scholarships<br />

The Division of Business, Humanities and Social Science is<br />

able to offer scholarships for full-time higher degree<br />

students from time to time.<br />

Applications<br />

Applicants should note that two to three months should be<br />

allowed for a successful aoolication to be evaluated.<br />

Additionally, applicants wishing to apply for a<br />

postgraduate award must submit their application to the<br />

University by 31 October in order to have the candidature<br />

finalised by the closing date for these awards.<br />

Prospective candidates in the first instance should contact<br />

the <strong>Higher</strong> Degrees and Research Officer, Division of<br />

Business, Humanities and Social Science on 9214 8744 from<br />

whom copies of the Statute for the degree of Doctor of<br />

Philosophy and the degree of Master (by research) may be<br />

The Centre for Innovation and Enterprise has a strong -<br />

commitment to research in entrepreneurship, management<br />

and associated disci~lines. There are currentlv manv PhD<br />

theses in progress including research into the<br />

commercialisation of Australian research, government<br />

policy on the development and performance of small<br />

manufacturing businesses, factors influencing strategic<br />

alliances in high-tech industries and evaluating the value of<br />

training investment. There are also a small number of<br />

students undertaking Master degrees by research.
