bring students to an awareness of the role that art and design<br />

plays in shaping and communicating our social, political and<br />

cultural values.<br />

Content<br />

Semester one explores European and Australian<br />

developments in design and art ranging from the industrial<br />

revolution and neo-classicism to the end of the nineteenth<br />

century. While charting the work of individual designers<br />

and artists the course also explores cultural themes such as<br />

gender and class, imperialism and nationalism, east and west<br />

and considers the influence of political and social conditions<br />

on western culture.<br />

Objectives<br />

To expand the range of design methodologies used to<br />

creatively resolve design problems.<br />

Content<br />

This subject refines design methodologies and will include<br />

product research, analysis and identification of the problem,<br />

methods for dealing with creative problem solving,<br />

removing mental blocks and clear thinking. Divergent and<br />

convergeit thought processes will be examined. Areas of<br />

interest will include lateral thinkinp;, -- form follows function,<br />

functionalism, association, brainstorming techniques and<br />

other methodologies. Practical exercises and discussions will<br />

consolidate these processes.<br />

Objectives<br />

To introduce students to the process of design and design<br />

practice.<br />

Content<br />

Through a series of practice projects, students will be<br />

introduced to the process of design and the incorporation of<br />

other design areaiinto this process.<br />

An introduction to the structure, properties, and processing<br />

of engineering materials.<br />

Content<br />

This subject introduces students to the classification,<br />

structure and properties of wood and wood products, wood<br />

technology, and machining and fabrication techniques.<br />

Areas of interest will inlcude testing and inspection<br />

techniques used to determine the properties of timber and<br />

wood products and designing for manufacture in wood and<br />

wood products.<br />

Engineering Graphics 1<br />

Objectives<br />

To give students a practical background in the skills and<br />

materials required to produce engineering drawings in<br />

accordance with AS1100.<br />

Content<br />

This subject deals with the formal technical skills of<br />

engineering drawing.<br />

This subject will cover requirements for engineering<br />

drawings, orthographic projection and auxiliary projections,<br />

sectioning and dimensioning, two dimensional geometry,<br />

details of machine elements, screws and fasteners, etc.<br />

Workshop Techniques 1 B<br />

Objectives<br />

This subject will develop skills and knowledge to enable the<br />

appropriate use of modelmaking materials, techniques and<br />

finishes.<br />

Content<br />

This subject will introduce a wider range of materials and<br />

techniques through demonstration and use of the workshop
