Objectives and Content<br />

This subject is intended first to consolidate students'<br />

counselling-related knowledge and skills acquired during<br />

undergraduate study. The second aim is to develop a high<br />

level of skill in those help-intended communication<br />

behaviours seen as fundamental to effective interpersonal<br />

helping. The third aim is to develop a basic level of<br />

competence in selected intervention techniques used<br />

frequently by counselling psychologists.<br />

psychodynamic, experiential, systemic;<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

This subject is designed to extend students' appreciation of<br />

developments in research related to counselling psychology.<br />

Students in the program give brief presentations concerning<br />

their proposed individual research projects.<br />

Presentations by school staff and visiting researchers and<br />

practitioners are made concerning current research in the<br />

field.<br />

Selected examples of published research are examined, which<br />

constitute exemplars of approaches to researching<br />

theoretical or practice issues in counselling psychology.<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

Introduction to life span development theory analysis of<br />

meta theories. Theoretical models derived from the<br />

above metatheory, e.g. Erikson, Piaget, Levinson,<br />

Bandura and others.<br />

The notion of life transitions and their links to the<br />

experience of stress and coping.<br />

Problems and issues in conceptualising and measuring<br />

development and adaptation to life events.<br />

Applications of the above theoretical material and<br />

models to specific life events and transitions including<br />

identity and intimacy issues in adolescence and young<br />

adulthood; developmental problems confronting men<br />

and women in mid-life and late adulthood; crises of<br />

development such as substance abuse; stress related<br />

illness and relationship breakdown.<br />

This subject builds upon knowledge of psychometrics gained<br />

from undergraduate study and is intended to equip graduates<br />

with skills in a selection of psychological Assessment:<br />

procedures.<br />

Topics include:<br />

a review of the foundations of psychological assessment<br />

including - reliability, validity;<br />

procedures for establishing and improving the reliability<br />

and validity of assessment procedures;
