The beginners stream consists of AV103, AV104 at stage<br />

one, AV203, AV204 at stage two, then AV303, AV304 and<br />

AV306 at stage three. Normally AV303 and AV304 are<br />

taken before or concurrently with AV306.<br />

Subjects related to Vietnamese studies may also be offered,<br />

and students are advised to check with the division for<br />

information.<br />

It should be noted that the Vietnamese major is sequential<br />

in nature. Students must complete both subjects in stage<br />

one before enrolling in stage two subjects, and these, in<br />

turn, must be completed before enrolling in stage three<br />

Italian Language and Culture<br />

This major is designed to acquaint students with Italian, an<br />

important community, cultural and commercial language.<br />

The broad aim is to enable students to communicate with<br />

Italians, on both linguistic and sociecultural levels. The<br />

major study in Italian therefore strongly -. emphasises -<br />

language acquisition, and progressively treats those aspects<br />

of Italian language, literature, history, geography,<br />

economics, sociology, politics and culture appropriate to<br />

an understanding of the modern nation and its inhabitants.<br />

A degree major in Italian may be obtained by undertaking<br />

studies in one of two streams offered: a beginners stream<br />

and a post-VCE stream.<br />

A beginners stream consists of AA109 and AA110 at stage<br />

one, followed by AA209 and AA210 of stage two, then<br />

AA309 and AA310 at stage three. Normally AA309 and<br />

AA310 are completed before, or concurrently with,<br />

AA313.<br />

The p~st-VCE stream requires a pass and above at VCE<br />

level or equivalent and consists of AA106 and AA107 at<br />

stage one, followed by AA206 and AA207 at stage two,<br />

then AA306 and AA307 at stage three. Normally AA306<br />

and AA307 are completed before, or concurrently with,<br />

AA313.<br />

Students undertaking a major in Italian are also strongly<br />

advised to enrol for AA119 Post-War Italy and AA212<br />

European Union.<br />

Context<br />

It should be noted that the Italian major is sequential in<br />

nature. Therefore st.udents must complete both subjects in<br />

stage one Italian before enrolling in the stage two subjects<br />

and these, in turn, must be completed before enrolling in<br />

the stage three subjects.<br />

Students should note that in first year, semester two,<br />

AA107 and AA110 are each worth two semester subjects<br />

toward their degree subject total.<br />

An honours program in Italian is available and MA and<br />

PhD programs by research and thesis in Italian are<br />

currently being offered. A double degree Bachelor of<br />

Business/Bachelor of Arts (Italian) is also available.<br />

Literature<br />

The Literature major is designed to provide students with<br />

the opportunity to consider literary works from a variety<br />

of historical periods, ranging from the renaissance to the<br />

twentieth century, and to explore the implications of<br />

cultural diversity in the literary traditions of Australia,<br />

America and post-colonial countries. In addition, the<br />

subjects offered are designed to encourage students to think<br />

critically about larger concepts beyond individual literary<br />

texts, such as the development of contemporary literary<br />

and critical theory, and the ways in which literature, as a<br />

form of communication, functions to give meaning to our<br />

experience and the world in which we live.<br />

The Literature major has been developed out of a<br />

sensitivity to the changing nature of this world, and<br />

especially changes in the meaning of terms such as<br />

literature, culture, and the popular. Through critical<br />

enquiry and hands-on experience, students will also have
