Library<br />

Libraries on each of the three campuses provide learning<br />

and information resources and services in support of<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong>'s teaching and research programs.<br />

The combined collections include over 200 000 books,<br />

3000 periodical titles, print and CD-ROM indexes and<br />

abstracts, and a large collection of audio and video tapes,<br />

slides, interactive videodiscs and computer software. All<br />

materials in the collections are available for use in the<br />

libraries, and most may be borrowed. Access to all<br />

collections is facilitated by an online catalogue and an<br />

inter-campus loan service. The range of resources available<br />

is extended through reciprocal borrowing arrangements<br />

with most other university and TAFE libraries, and a<br />

number of networked access arrangements to electronic<br />

- databases including Internet access.<br />

Library staff work closely with teaching staff to develop<br />

g collections of resources and help students to make best use<br />

of them. Programs designed to develop students'<br />

information skills are an integral part of most courses.<br />

Persons entitled to use the library<br />

Each campus library is available for the use of all full-time and<br />

part-time students and staff of <strong>Swinburne</strong> University of<br />

Technology who accept the library regulations. Members of<br />

the general public, including past students and staff, are<br />

welcome to read or use the facilities within the library<br />

provided that they also accept the regulations. They may also<br />

borrow from each library on payment of a membership fee to<br />

the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Library Information Service.<br />

The <strong>Swinburne</strong> Librarian, Campus Librarian, or the senior<br />

staff member on the premises, may refuse entry to the<br />

library to any person not registered as a borrower.<br />

Full-time and part-time staff members of <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

University of Technology.<br />

Approved borrowers from other institutions with which<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> has reciprocal borrowing agreements.<br />

Registered members of the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Library Information<br />

Service.<br />

Such other persons or organisations as the <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

Librarian or Campus Librarian may from time to time<br />

approve as borrowers.<br />

Photocopying<br />

Photocopying machines are available in the library. Users<br />

must note the relevant provisions of the Copyright Act and<br />

abide by them.<br />

Borrowing<br />

All material borrowed must be recorded at appropriate<br />

issue points before the patron enters the security gate to<br />

leave the library. The borrower accepts responsibility for<br />

the care of any item borrowed and for its return in good<br />

condition on or before the due date. The library reserves<br />

the right to recall any item on loan before the expiration of<br />

the normal loan period.<br />

Most library materials may be returned to any of the<br />

campus libraries. Videocassettes must be returned to the<br />

campus from which they were borrowed.<br />

Identity cards<br />

A current <strong>Swinburne</strong> identity card must be presented each<br />

time an item is borrowed, otherwise service will be refused.<br />

Cards are not transferable and lost identity cards must be<br />

reported and replaced immediately.<br />

Borrowing periods<br />

Students: the normal loan period for students is a fortnight.<br />

This period may be extended for two renewals provided<br />

that the item has not been reserved by another user and<br />

that it is not overdue.<br />

Staff: the normal loan period for staff members and higher<br />

degree students for most library material is four weeks.<br />

This period may be extended for two renewals provided<br />

that the item has not been reserved by another user and<br />

that it is not overdue.<br />

N.B. Items on short-term loan -i.e. less than two weeks -<br />

cannot be extended.
