A major in Japanese can be completed in a beginners or<br />

advanced (post-VCE Japanese) stream. The subjects AJ103,<br />

AJ104, AJ203, AJ204, AJ303, AJ304 and one of AJ307,<br />

AJ308 or AJ310 form a degree major in the beginners<br />

stream. The subjects AJ105, AJ106, AJ205, AJ206, AJ305,<br />

AJ306 and one of AJ307, AJ308 or AJ310 form a degree<br />

major in the advanced stream. AJ303/AJ304 or AJ305/<br />

AJ306 can be completed before or concurrently with one<br />

of AJ307, AJ308 or AJ310.<br />

Students undertaking a major in Japanese are strongly<br />

advised to enrol also for AJ102 Introduction to Japan - A<br />

Cultural Overview and AJ202 Communication in<br />

Japanese, which provide an essential background to<br />

Japanese language and culture, in the following order:<br />

(i) AJ102 Introduction to Japan - A Cultural Overview<br />

which is offered in both semesters concurrently with<br />

the first year subjects of each stream;<br />

(ii) AJ202 Communication in Japanese - which is offered<br />

in both semesters concurrently with the second year<br />

subjects of each stream.<br />

; AJ102 Introduction to Japan - A Cultural Overview is<br />

3 also available to those not undertaking the full Japanese<br />

AP204, Modern Japan, offered by Political Studies, is also<br />

highly recommended.<br />

Note: Students whose stage two results are credit or above in<br />

either the beginners or the advanced stream may choose to<br />

study a part of their third year course at a n approved<br />

tertiary institution in Japan. A scholarship scheme has been<br />

established to enable students to undertake this altmtive.<br />

Korean<br />

The course offers three years of systematic language<br />

training to enable students to communicate effectively in<br />

modern spoken Korean, and to read fluently a wide range<br />

of modern written material in Korean.<br />

Supporting subjects provide the opportunity to<br />

supplement language studies with courses on culture,<br />

society, economy and politics.<br />

The subjects AK103, AK104, AK205, AK206, AK303,<br />

AK304, and AK305 form a degree major in Korean.<br />

Students intending to complete a major should enrol in the<br />

first instance in AK103 and AK104.<br />

Students undertaking a major in Korean are also strongly<br />

advised to enrol for subject AK102 Traditional Korea,<br />

which is offered in the first semester. This subject is also<br />

open to students not undertaking the full Korean language<br />

sequence.<br />

Since language studies at <strong>Swinburne</strong> are designed for<br />

beginners, students with native proficiency in a language<br />

taught at <strong>Swinburne</strong> will not normally be eligible to enrol<br />

in that language.<br />

All incoming students in Korean will be assessed in terms<br />

of their expertise in the language. Those students who<br />

display a high level of competence in this regard may be<br />

required to study an alternative syllabus to that shown in<br />

this <strong>Handbook</strong>.<br />

If a student requests exemption from any part of a Korean<br />

subject no credit will be granted unless the student has<br />

previously completed studies which are part of a degree<br />

program studied at a recognised institution.<br />
