EF615 Introduction to Accounting and<br />

Finance<br />

A compulsory subject in the Graduate Diploma in<br />

Management.<br />

Objectives and content<br />

An introductory course giving: mastery of basic principles of<br />

accounting and double entry bookkeeping to obtain trial<br />

balances and produce profit and loss statements, balance sheets<br />

and funds statements; understanding of financial mathematics<br />

and ability to apply spreadsheets to financial modelling, forecast<br />

financial requirements and to evaluate investments and<br />

businesses.<br />

Objectives and content<br />

An introductory study of industrial development and the<br />

growth of managerial functions leading to an understanding<br />

of the complexities of managing an enterprise in the business<br />

world of today. The importance of innovation and<br />

entrepreneurship is stressed.<br />

As with other core subjects within the course, the study will<br />

integrate key elements - financial, human and organisational<br />

- of management.<br />

It includes a general introduction to management theories,<br />

to fundamentals of finance, to human and organisational<br />

aspects of management and to fundamental legal concepts of<br />

organisation.<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

An introductory course addressing the requirements of<br />

project, life cycle and asset management. Considerations<br />

include: project initiation, implementation and termination;<br />

financial and legal requirements; life cycle costing; plant<br />

procurement, operation, reliability, maintenance, update<br />

and disposal.<br />

EF618 Management Practices<br />

3 hours per week Hawthorn Prerequisite: EF616<br />

Management Fundamentals Assessment: a combination of<br />

personal assignments, group assignments, class participation<br />

Objectives and Content<br />

An extending course addressing the practice of management<br />

through the development of business strategies (including<br />

innovation and entrepreneurial aspects), and their impact on<br />

marketing, human, quality, operational, legal and financial<br />

faces of an enterprise and its operations.<br />

EF620 Human Aspects<br />

3 hours per week Hawthorn Pre~uisite: nil<br />

A compulsory subject in the Graduate Diploma in<br />

Management.<br />

Objectives and content<br />

This subject is designed to build upon the work of the<br />

introductory work in the first semester and treat the<br />

material with more depth and practicality.<br />

Topics covered include: theoretical base interpersonal<br />

relationship and individual development; individual<br />

differences, personality theory, value and value systems,<br />

group dynamics, - role theory, leadership intergroup<br />

competition, intepersonal communication, perception,<br />

thinking processes and memory. Business politics. Human<br />

resources management: recruitment, selection and training.<br />

Aptitude testing. Management development and personnel<br />

appraisal systems. Wage and salary structures, benefits and<br />

financial reward schemes.<br />

Performance factors motivation, job satisfaction, morale,<br />

management of conflict, organisation structures and their<br />

effects on behaviour, effecting change in the organisation.<br />

Industrial relations practical industrial relations for<br />

supervisors and managers.<br />

EF623 Marketing<br />

3 hours per week Hawthorn Prerequisite: nil<br />
