without touching the ground. The Beastlands does notpresent any inherent benefit or penalty to combat, thought cover and concealment are plentiful.FEATURES OF THE BEASTLANDSThe Beastlands is divided into three layers: a land of eternalday known as Krigala on the top, a territory of duskcalled Brux in the middle, and a moonlit place of firefliesand wandering stars, Karasuthra, on the bottom.KrigalaThe Beastlands’ top layer is Krigala, split in two by theRiver Oceanus. The river flows through the layer in astrong torrent, flanked by verdant forests that oftenbridge the great river with intertwined branches above.Small side channels depart from the river, and there arenumerous bayous and oxbow lakes formed whenever thisextraplanar river alters its banks.Krigala is a land of eternal afternoon. A warm sunbasks the land in its continual glow. It is just warmenough in Krigala for the plant life of the area, and temperaturesremain in a comfortable range unless manipulatedby spells or divine will.Time passes normally but is not tracked by the movingof the sun. Instead, gentle rains drift in on soft breezesonce per day. More rarely, occasional thunderstormsstrike, sending many of Krigala’s beasts to cover. The centaur deity Skerrit lives in Krigala with his closestpetitioners. Skerrit is a lesser deity, but he is greatlyvenerated by the centaurs. The deity’s realm looks littledifferent from the surrounding woods, and the homes ofhis petitioners are often small huts and lean-tos. When afeast is called (and that’s often if you’re a centaur), thecentaurs set out great tables in the midst of the forest, trusting to Krigala’s benign nature and Skerrit’s power tokeep them in line.Skerrit’s petitioners take centaur form but are otherwisesimilar to other Beastlander petitioners. They attackas centaurs do (two hooves at a +3 attack bonus, dealing1d6+2 points of damage). In extreme cases, Skerrit mightarm them, but such events are exceedingly rare. Most of the creatures encountered in Krigala would beactive during the day if they lived on the Material Plane. Most of the native life has a basic understanding of howthe portals between the layers work, and they can avoid theportals instinctively if they choose.BeastlandsBruxKrigalaKarasuthraThe Grove of the Unicorns: Deep within the Beastlandsis the realm of Ehlonna, deity of forests andwoodlands. The grove sits at the base of a cluster ofgreat sequoias that form a natural cathedral for thosebeneath the canopy. The lowest branches of the greatredwoods are hundreds of feet in the air, such thatthose with wings can fly through Ehlonna’s cathedralwithout difficulty. Those who reside within the borders of Ehlonna’srealm live in peace with the trees and animals, and theyare similarly left alone by the wild creatures. The thinkingcreatures of the Beastlands adore Ehlonna, suchthat she is often aware of occurrences that happen farfrom her Realm.True to its name, the grove attracts groups of unicorns. These are both unicorns with the celestial template andhalf-celestial/half-unicorns (as described in the MonsterCHAPTER 7:THE OUTERPLANESpqqqqrsEHLONNA, DEITY OF THE WOODLANDSEhlonna appears in her realm as a dark-haired woman or agolden-tressed elven maid. A planetar named Novalee attendsEhlonna at all times. Though Novalee rarely speaks, allEhlonna’s petitioners agree that his heart is pure and his noblespirit unsullied. Some exceptional petitioners serving Ehlonna slowly becomecelestial unicorns. Ehlonna also has more common petitionerswho are typical Beastlanders, though they tend to grow cosmeticfeatures reminiscent of unicorns or other equines.Ehlonna has deep philosophical differences with Obad-Hai,the Nature Deity of the Outlands, and the two are consideredrivals. Ehlonna believes in a beneficial nature, tranquil andbountiful. Obad-Hai celebrates a wilder and more heartlessaspect of nature, red of tooth and claw. Characters who havedealings with one deity should be wary in the lair of the other.pqqqqrs143
