Their flocks follow a single leader whoremains in charge as long as he or she can defeat opponentsin a “clash of horns” (a sequence of charge attackssimilar to a jousting competition).Bariaurs love contests of all kinds, eagerly matching wits in a tale-tellingcompetition, racing across the greatgrasslands of Ysgard, or leaping fromriver rock to river rock until only onebariaur remains dry. They’re eager to trythe mettle of newcomers and visitors inthese events, which tend to be sourcesof good-natured amusement ratherthan rigorous tests of fitness. Rare isthe bariaur who takes a contest tooseriously; he or she is sure to beadmonished to lighten up by theflock’s elders. The bariaur diet is herbivorous, withberries, nuts, and leaves being staplefoods. They’re well aware of everyberry patch and fruit tree for miles. An exception is bariaur rangers, who may eat meat—particularlyfrom woodland creatures they’vehunted themselves.Bariaurs revere Ehlonna, deity of thewoodlands.BARIAUR CHARACTERSA bariaur’s favored class is ranger. As arule of thumb, bariaurs are balancedas player characters one level lowerthan those of the standard races inthe Player’s Handbook. For example, a4th-level bariaur ranger would beright at home among a party of 5thleveladventurers.Illus. by D. RicheCHAPTER 9:MONSTERS161
