damage bonus does not apply to creatures immune tocritical hits. The champion chooses only one favored plane, andeven identical creatures from other planes are notaffected. For example if a planar champion choosesthe Nine Hells as her favored plane, she wouldgain the bonus against devils native to thatplane, but not devils from theadjacent plane of Acheron. The planar champion’s studieshelp in noncombat settingsas well. The planar championgets a +1 bonus on Diplomacyand Gather Information checkswhen interacting with nativesof the favored plane. IntuitDirection checks get a +1bonus when performed on thefavored plane. The planar champion gainsa second favored plane whenreaching 5th level and a thirdfavored plane when reaching10th level. When gaining anew favored plane, the bonusesfor previous favored planesincrease by +1. For example, a5th-level planar championcould choose Acheron as anew favored plane, earning a+1 bonus against its natives, and her bonus againstnatives of the Nine Hellswould increase to +2. Theplanar champion may notchoose her native plane asa favored plane. The bonuses from thisability stack with theranger’s favored enemy ability.A ranger/planar champion with afavored enemy of devils and a favored plane of theNine Hells adds both bonuses together when fighting adevil native to the Nine Hells.See Invisibility (Su): Upon reaching 2nd level, aplanar champion has the ability to see invisibility at will,as per the spell cast by a 5th-level sorcerer. This abilityallows her to see (but not affect) ethereal creatures.Attack Ethereal (Su): A planar champion of3rd level or higher can transform her weaponinto a material force effect at will, enabling herto attack creatures on the Ethereal Plane. Theplanar champion begins and ends this abilityas a free action, but must use it on a meleeweapon she has Weapon Specialization in. Ifthe planar champion is wielding a magicweapon, this ability also eliminates the50% miss chance when attacking anincorporeal foe.Planar Survival (Ex): At 4thlevel, a planar champion becomesattuned to the nature of the planesshe visits and personally immuneto their natural planar effects.Any effect that would be negatedby the avoid planar effects spell isnegated by the planar survivalability as well. The planar champion is immuneto the “normal” fires ofthe Elemental Plane of Fire, but fire-based attack formsand unusually fiery areasthere still affect her. Becausethis extraordinary ability isthe result of attuning herselfto a particular plane, theplanar champion remainsvulnerable to the same sortof damage in other planeswhere that attack form is notpart of the natural order. Fireson other planes, includingthe Material Plane, affect hernormally.Ethereal Jaunt (Sp): A planarchampion of 6th level or highermay step onto the Ethereal Planethree times per day. This functions as the etherealjaunt spell cast by a 13th-level sorcerer.Rip Portal (Sp): Once per day, a planar champion of 7thlevel or higher can rip a portal through the Astral PlaneTable 3–5: The Planar ChampionClass Base Fort Ref WillLevel Attack Bonus Save Save Save Special1st +1 +2 +2 +0 Favored plane2nd +2 +3 +3 +0 See invisibility3rd +3 +3 +3 +1 Attack ethereal4th +4 +4 +4 +1 Planar survival5th +5 +4 +4 +1 Favored plane6th +6 +5 +5 +2 Ethereal jaunt7th +7 +5 +5 +2 Rip portal8th +8 +6 +6 +2 Sunder portal9th +9 +6 +6 +3 Damage reduction 20/+110th +10 +7 +7 +3 Favored planeCHAPTER 3:CHARACTERSAND MAGIC Illus. by M.
