CHAPTER 7:THE OUTERPLANES94Consult the table below to determine how large an areaa character can control.Table 7–2: Controlled LimboWisdomScore Area of Control Stabilized Area1–3 None —4–7 1-ft. radius —8–11 5-ft. radius —12–15 10-ft. radius —16–19 15-ft. radius —20–23 20-ft. radius 5-ft. radius24+ +5 ft. per 4 Wis points +5 ft. per 4 Wis pointsWisdom Score: If the Wisdom check is successful, referencethe controlling creature’s Wisdom score to determine thesize of the area of control.Area of Control: “None” indicates that the creature isunable to gain control of its environment. The increasing radiidenote an area of control surrounding the controlling creature,so a creature with a 1-foot-radius area of control can createonly a 1-foot buffer between itself and the environment.Stabilized Area: Stabilized areas form at the very center of,and overlap, an area of control. When an area of controllapses, stabilized areas remain.Once control is achieved, it lasts as long as the controllerremains in the controlled area, or until anothercreature succeeds in wresting control away. Controlledareas drift at 1d4×10 feet per round in a random direction. If more than one creature successfully gains controlof an area at the same time, control goes to the contenderwith the highest Intelligence. If two controlledareas of Limbo move so they overlap, the overlap arearemains under the power of the controller with thehigher Intelligence. In the case of a tie in either case, compare Charisma scores.Stabilized Limbo: A section of Limbo becomes stabilizedif a creature of sufficiently high Wisdom createsit within an area of control. The stabilized area inthe center of the area of control retains its traits. Itdrifts at the whim of Limbo’s chaotic currents and, ifnot protected, is eventually eroded by repeated immersionsin the elemental surges. For instance, a 5-footradiusball of fire could become stable if created by acreature with a Wisdom of 20 or higher. Over thecourse of several dunks in water, however, it is erodedand finally dissipated. However, industrious creaturescan bring bits of stabilized earth together and use themas the foundation for permanent structures, especiallyif tended by guardians.pqsWHAT CAN I DO WITH CONTROLLED LIMBO?Most controllers are unable to achieve any works of complexitywithin the area they control. The best most can do is mix twoor three elements—and not too subtly. Rare minds calledanarchs can build objects of amazing complexity, includingstructures and even simple vegetation. Anarch ability is exceedinglyrare even among Limbo’s inhabitants. It’s even less likelythat visitors have anarch ability.pqsLIMBO INHABITANTSSlaadi and githzerai are commonly associated withLimbo. Of the two, only the slaadi have been nativessince time began. The githzerai arrived far later, seeingthe entire plane as a challenge to their indomitable spirit.Limbo is also a harsh proving ground for their particularethos: “Pain is weakness leaving your body.”Even though they’re natives, the slaadi control Limbojust like travelers do. However, a slaad’s control never falterseven if the slaad is unconscious, and the area of controlsurrounds the slaad tightly. To viewers, it seems as if aslaad lolls unhurt in a bath of fire. The few githzerai who follow a monastic calling alsofollow the dictates of law, and such monks are particularlychallenged by the chaos of Limbo. However, thestrongly chaos-aligned trait of Limbo is neutralized bythe walls of githzerai monasteries. Most githzerai do notfollow a monastic calling and congregate in large cities. The petitioners of Limbo are those who revere chaosabove all else. Some come to embody the plane, whileothers linger as insane spirits composed of shiftinglimbo-stuff.Limbo PetitionersPetitioners who reach Limbo gain the following specialqualities:Additional Immunities: Fire, cold.Resistances: Electricity 20, acid 20.Other Special Qualities: The petitioners of Limbowho are not absorbed back into the plane often appear asswirling masses of chaos-stuff, gibbering and laughingwithout regard to their surroundings. Like slaadi, Limbo’spetitioners automatically control the chaos in their personalvicinity even if unconscious or flat-footed, renderingthem immune to their tempestuous environment.MOVEMENT AND COMBATLike everything else in Limbo, movement depends onthe local conditions. Where air is dominant, a travelercan take advantage of the subjective gravity trait to fall ina desired direction at a maximum speed of 300 feet. Travelersin fire-dominant areas can also take advantage ofsubjective gravity, assuming the traveler can survive thetrip. Swimming through water and burrowing throughearth are also possibilities.Normally, travelers attempt to gain control of a particulararea, turning it into an air-dominant or earth-and-airdominantarea. From the edge of each controlled area, they gain control of an adjacent area, then move there, repeating the process as they make their way across theplane. A comforting method of travel is to allow gravityto pull one’s feet toward a chunk of earth (over whichhovers an atmosphere of air) and walk upon it normally.Maps are useless in the chaotic expanse. Over time, even solid, permanent structures drift in the chaotic currentsof Limbo. The time it takes an individual or group ofindividuals to reach a particular area depends on howfamiliar they are with that area:
