The door, if there is one, is never locked, and itopens into the World Serpent Inn’s common room. This main entrance is a two-way portal, though asnoted above, its destination changes frequently. TheInn also has hundreds of other exits, which are accessiblefrom a maze of passages leading out of the commonroom in all directions. Most of these other exits areone-way portals, and they are usually (though notalways) clearly marked. Some always lead to the sameplane, but others have variable destinations. The World Serpent Inn has its own Ethereal Plane, which does not connect to the Ethereal Plane coexistentwith the Material Plane. Like its counterpart, thisEthereal Plane is home to creatures such as etherealfilchers and ghosts. The Inn’s Ethereal Plane coexistsprimarily with its back rooms and corridors, but thepresence of a powerful ghost may cause a tendril of it toreach into the common room from time to time.Because of the Inn’s visibility trait, ethereal creaturesare visible to those within the Inn.The World Serpent Inn is also coterminous with thePlane of Shadow, but again the points of connectionoccur mostly in the back rooms and corridors. Suchportals usually lead to the wild, desolate reaches ofDeep Shadow.World Serpent Inn InhabitantsAn ever-changing cast of characters, includinggithyanki, illithids, outsiders, planetouched, half-elementals,humans, and humanoids, can be encounteredin the World Serpent Inn. At any given time, betweenone and two dozen travelers are lounging in thecommon room. Some have lived in the Inn for yearsand remember no other life. Others are waiting for portalsto open to particular locations so that they can findloved ones, complete quests, or just return home. The minor positive energy and damage reductiontraits reduce the incidence of death in the commonroom, though they by no means eliminate it. Brawlsare frequent there, particularly between sworn enemies(such as celestials and devils, or githyanki andillithids). The one permanent inhabitant of the World SerpentInn is the barkeep, Mitchifer. He always appears as alarge, bearded, human male, but his abilities (and evenhis character class) seem to change depending uponthe situation. Regardless of his specific abilities, he isalways 20th level or higher, and he most often seems tobe a fighter. Speculation runs rife that Mitchifer is arefugee of one cosmic faction or another, or perhapseven a god or former deity in his own right. There havebeen reports of his death over the years, but he hasalways returned.Mitchifer provides newcomers with basic informationabout the Inn. (“Food’s on the house. Leave whenyou’re ready. Management is not responsible for loss ofproperty or life in the back rooms.”) Beyond that, heswears ignorance, though he often hooks up likemindedindividuals in the common room or recommendsa source for particular information that someoneseeks. Mitchifer employs an ever-changing crew ofwaitstaff and cooks, some of whom are former travelerswho have chosen to remain and serve. Should he not bepresent, one of these employees or another travelergreets new arrivals and acquaints them with the law ofthe land.Mitchifer may or may not be a god or godlike power, but his superior (known only as “The Owner”) probablyis a deity—perhaps even of Uber-God status. Thenature and identity of the Owner is a common topic ofconversation around the fireplace. Most travelersassume that this being can determine where thecommon room’s portal next opens, and Mitchifer lends3
