CHAPTER 3:CHARACTERSAND MAGIC24Table 3–1: Level AdjustmentsLevelLevelRaceAdjustment RaceAdjustmentAasimar +1 Githzerai +2Bariaur +1 Spinagon +4Canoloth +5 Tiefling +1Githyanki +2 Uridezu +5Creating Characters Using ECL: Only let a playercreate a character of a nonstandard race when you wouldotherwise allow that player to create a higher-level standardcharacter of equivalent power. Thus, a 1st-leveltiefling sorcerer with an ECL of 2 could not enter thegame until you would normally allow standard 2nd-levelcharacters to enter the game.Advancing Characters Using ECL: As a measure of acharacter’s power, ECL is equivalent to character level.Normally, character level is the sum of all the characters’classes. Thus, a multiclass human 3rd-level sorcerer/4thlevelrogue has a character level of 7. When next he goesup a level, he’ll have a character level of 8; this requires7,000 more XP, as shown on Table 3–2 in the Player’sHandbook.A character with an ECL due to a nonstandard racerequires more XP to advance. For instance, a tiefling 3rdlevelsorcerer/4th-level rogue has an ECL of 8 (+1 leveladjustment for being a tiefling, +7 for the character level).To go up a level, the tiefling uses her ECL on the CharacterLevel column on Table 3–2 in the Player’s Handbook.The tiefling needs 8,000 more XP to advance to the nextlevel (as she goes from ECL 8 to ECL 9).Table 3–2: ECL Experience RequirementsECL =Level +1 ECL =ECL = (Aasimar, Level +2 ECL = ECL =Level Bariaur, (Githyanki, Level +4 Level +5XP (Normal) Tiefling) Githzerai) (Canoloth) (Uridezu)0 1st — — — —1,000 2nd 1st — — —3,000 3rd 2nd 1st — —6,000 4th 3rd 2nd — —10,000 5th 4th 3rd 1st —15,000 6th 5th 4th 2nd 1st21,000 7th 6th 5th 3rd 2nd28,000 8th 7th 6th 4th 3rd36,000 9th 8th 7th 5th 4th45,000 10th 9th 8th 6th 5th55,000 11th 10th 9th 7th 6th66,000 12th 11th 10th 8th 7th78,000 13th 12th 11th 9th 8th91,000 14th 13th 12th 10th 9th105,000 15th 14th 13th 11th 10th120,000 16th 15th 14th 12th 11th136,000 17th 16th 15th 13th 12th153,000 18th 17th 16th 14th 13th171,000 19th 18th 17th 15th 14th190,000 20th 19th 18th 16th 15th210,000 — 20th 19th 17th 16th231,000 — — 20th 18th 17th253,000 — — — 19th 18th276,000 — — — 20th 19th300,000 — — — — 20thEssentially, the experience point requirement for anonstandard character to reach the next level is different.Instead of needing character level × 1,000 XP to reachthe next level, a nonstandard character needs ECL ×1,000. This adjustment is summarized on Table 3–2: ECLExperience Requirements.PRESTIGE CLASSESWith the right spell or portal, any character can make acareer traveling from plane to plane.
