They are piecesof reality that don’t seem to fit anywhere else.Accordingly, they can possess a great variety of traits.Demiplanes can exist for any number of reasons.They may be created by arcane or divine spells.They may be generated at the desire of a powerful deityor other force. They may exist naturally, as a fold of existingreality that has been pinched off from the rest of theuniverse, or as a baby universe growing in power.Demiplanes are typically coterminous to largerplanes, but they have their own environments and theirown planar traits. The creatures that call a demiplanehome are often radically different from the natives ofthe larger plane attached to the demiplane.This chapter lays the groundwork for building yourown demiplanes, and it provides three example demiplanes:Neth, the Plane that Lives; the Observatorium;and Common Ground.DEMIPLANE TRAITSDemiplanes can have a wide variety of traits, and it’salmost impossible to generalize about them.• Any Gravity Trait.• Any Time Trait.• Finite Size: They may be incredibly large, butdemiplanes always have a finite size. Manydemiplanes are self-contained with edges thatwrap in on themselves so that a traveler movingin one direction eventually ends up where thejourney began.• Any Morphic Trait.• Any Elemental and Energy Traits: Or no elementalor energy traits at all.• Any Alignment Traits: Demiplanes cansimilarly have no alignment traits at all.• Any Magic Trait.DEMIPLANE LINKSDemiplanes are almost always coterminousplanes that are moored to another, major planeat a single location. Usually the larger plane isthe Material Plane, but portals to a demiplanecan be found on the Astral Plane, the EtherealPlane, and any of the Inner or Outer Planes.Because they’re so small, demiplaneshave several access restrictions. First, theycan only be accessed from a specific spot onthe larger plane. A demiplane usually has aportal at a stationary location on the largerplane. Some demiplanes are coterminous153
