CHAPTER 3:CHARACTERSAND MAGIC30to another plane of existence. By tearing a hole in thefabric of the plane she’s on, the champion may open aportal onto the Astral Plane or any plane that the AstralPlane touches that the champion has visited before. Asper the plane shift spell, the planar champion has no controlover the precise destination on whatever plane sherips a portal to. The portal appears as a ragged hole inspace adjacent to the planar champion and lasts for 1d4+1rounds before healing over.Sunder Portal (Sp): Once per day, a planar champion of8th level or higher has the ability to seal a dimensionalgate or portal by severing the connection to the destination. She may do with a successful level check (DC 5 +the caster level of the gate or portal). The gate spell isdestroyed as if dispelled, while portals are suppressed for1d6 days.Damage Reduction (Su): At 9th level, a planarchampion gains damage reduction 20/+1. This meansthat the character ignores (instantly regenerates) the first20 points of damage from any attack unless the damageis dealt by a weapon with a +1 or higher enhancementbonus, by a spell, or by a form of energy (fire, cold, andso on). This ability does not stack with other damagereduction abilities.PLANESHIFTERThe planeshifter is a magical scholar and expert in planartravel, and through arcane research develops not only theability to sense planar portals, but also the ability to createhis own demiplane. (Being around long enough to use itis another matter.)Wizards and sorcerers, steeped in their arcane knowledge, make the best planeshifters, and some degree ofarcane spellcasting ability is required to join their numbers. They form loose organizations with titles such asthe Eternal Book or the Study Group of Planar Entities. These organizations are more like fraternal organizationsthan guilds or power groups, and they seem to appear(and disappear) with great frequency.NPC planeshifters are rarely in the same place for long. They’re always going to see some new planar sight orphenomenon. They sometimes hire adventurers as bodyguards, assistants, or troubleshooters.Hit Dice: d4.RequirementsTo become a planeshifter, a character must fulfill thefollowing criteria.Skills: Concentration 10 ranks, Knowledge (theplanes) 4 ranks, Spellcraft 10 ranks.Feats: Craft Wondrous Item.Spells: Able to cast 5th-level arcane spells.Special: Must have visited an Inner or Outer Planebefore taking this prestige class.Class SkillsThe planeshifter’s class skills (and the key ability foreach) are: Alchemy (Int), Concentration (Con), Craft(Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Gather Information (Cha),Intimidate (Cha), Intuit Direction (Wis), Knowledge(all skills taken individually) (Int), Perform (Cha), Profession(Wis), Ride (Dex), Scry (Int), Search (Int),Speak Language (none), Spellcraft (Int), and Swim(Str). See Chapter 4: Skills in the Player’s Handbook forskill descriptions.Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Int modifier.Class FeaturesAll the following are class features of the planeshifterprestige class.Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Planeshifters gainno proficiency with any weapon or armor.Plane Shift (Sp): A planeshifter has the ability to planeshift (as the spell cast by a sorcerer of his character level)once per day. At 8th level, the planeshifter can use thisability at will.Spells per Day: A planeshifter continues training inmagic as well as gaining power in the planes. Thus, whena new level is gained (except for 1st, 5th, and 9th), thecharacter gains new spells per day as if he had also gaineda level in whatever arcane spellcasting class he belongedto before he added the prestige class. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that classwould have gained. This essentially means that he addsthe level of planeshifter to the level of whatever otherspellcasting class the character has, then determinesspells per day accordingly. If a character had more than one arcane spellcastingclass before he became a planeshifter, he must decide towhich class he adds each level of planeshifter for the purposesof determining spells per day when he adds thenew level.Analyze Portal (Sp): At 2nd level, a planeshifter gainsthe ability to use analyze portal as a spell-like ability. Hemay do this once per planeshifter level per day. Thisability otherwise functions as the spell cast by a sorcererof a level equal to the planeshifter’s highestcaster level.Planar Survival (Ex): A planeshifter of 3rd level orhigher becomes attuned to the nature of the planes hevisits and personally immune to their natural planareffects. Any effect that would be negated by the avoidplanar effects spell is negated by the planar survival abilityas well. The planeshifter is immune to the “normal” fires ofthe Elemental Plane of Fire, but fire-based attack formsand unusually fiery areas there still affect him. Becausethis extraordinary ability is the result of attuning himselfto a particular plane, the planeshifter remains vulnerableto the same sort of damage in other planeswhere that attack form is not part of the natural order.Fires on other planes, including the Material Plane, affect him normally.Morphic Stability (Ex): At 4th level, a planeshiftergains the ability to impose his will on his surroundings
