When one is cooking a meal, one puts the food in the ovenand the heat cooks it without further action on the part of thecooker. Is this the same sort of energy as that used in burning downa house?MR. O. It will burn your dinner if you use same energy!MR. A . In the action of painting a picture, I observe three actions: (1)building a house (2) painting a picture (3) invention. Is this correct andcan that be further explained?MR. O. It depends on the picture.MR. L. Are the activities of different qualities, as for example, buildinga house a higher activity than burning a house?MR. O. Higher from which point of view?MR. L. I think it was an expression you used yourself.MR. O. In some connection, probably; not just like that. Higher orlower, what does it mean, like that? They are simply different. Appleand pear are different, but which is higher? We cannot speak aboutwhat is higher in relation to nothing.MR. L. Is stealing a picture the highest activity?MR. O. Same answer.MR. L. In self-observation, I discover myself very often, automatically,silently dividing my footsteps into series of five, or trying to formgroups of five visually, scanning whatever is before me.

We must establish that it is wrongor harmful. Why cure something that may have positive meaning orno meaning at all? Necessary to begin with what it is. There aremany different kinds of automatic activities. It is necessary to take aparticular case and see why it is wrong, if it is. It may have no meaning.MRS. P. Have the various 'I's centres? From personal observations itseems they have quite different sorts of negative emotions, differentways and times of day-dreaming, imagining and identifying: have theyalso rudimentary centres?MR. O. How can 'I's have centres? Each centre and part of centre ispopulated by certain 'I's.MRS. D. Was the experiment of prohibition in America an example ofthe results being exactly the opposite of the aim?MR. O. All political activities are examples of this. They never come totheir advertised aim, always to the opposite aim.MISS F. I find that I have got no result from my work in the form ofquestions. I go carefully over the same ground (self-observation onnegative emotions, etc.), but get no fresh questions. Does this meanthat I only imagine I am working?MR. O. No, you cannot say just like that. Necessary to go deeper.Maybe you are avoiding just one necessary effort. If one avoids oneeffort, a special, individual kind; often all other work will give noresult until one attempts to do something with this particular effort.MISS F. I find that I can't do anything until it has already happened.When trying to reason with myself about negative emotions, or tryingto force myself to stop some argument going on in my mind, I can getno results. But on one or two occasions I have suddenly found myselfhaving the right attitude without any effort. Is this the result of myprevious effort or just an accident?MR. O. Most probably.MR. F.
