It is one small effort and the bough comes off anddecays.Is amputating a human limb successfully like inventing an electricbell?MR. O. These are wrong form of questions. You must not ask me suchthings as this. At this time we cannot give much time to discussion oftheoretical subjects, but I will just repeat that you must try to see what it allmeans. That actions are as different as things. We know the differencebetween an orange and a pencil. Actions are even more different. I gave sixexamples, six types of action. You must try to understand each separatelyand find what is analogous. But that is your work, not my work.MRS. P. Is militarism a human activity that belongs to the category ofcrime?MR. O. Militarism is not activity. It is a theory.MR. H. Are the laws of accident and cause and effect less organic thanthose of fate and will?Would change in being mean that a group of 'I's no longer expressedthemselves, or would it mean that one was no longer negative and hadno loss of energy through that group of 'I's?MR. O. You must understand you cannot bring everything to onepoint. You must understand all the features of your present being andthen you will see in what order they can change. That is the only wayyou can understand.MR. H. Would Mr. O. explain in what way conscious music can act asmagic? I was thinking of the influence of vibrations.MR. O. Well, it will kill you, for instance.MRS. C. What is wanting when I am reminded to remember myself bynegative emotions and when the negative emotion fades away but Istill cannot remember myself?
MR. O. That means you made the negative emotion fade by trying toremember yourself and that already is good. Incidentally, this is theway to make negative emotions disappear. They cannot stand beforeself-remembering.MISS T . I do not find I have any real idea of what self-remembering is.I can become aware of myself at certain times, but there is nothing inthose moments to fix them in my memory. Is there any scale or qualityby which we can measure our understanding of self-remembering?MR. O. By experience and understanding of the idea. What we lackwhen we do not remember ourselves and what we get when we doremember ourselves.MR. H. I have not got any results from trying to think of differentkinds of activity except the realization that the difference betweenthem is not clear to me. I have a sort of hope that if I could keep mymind on the question for long enough I should understand something.Should it be possible to make a start with this in any state?MR. O. It is necessary to go on thinking, but just keeping your mindon it cannot do much. Mind must bring material, but it is necessary tofeel. Then we think we have only one state to start with, but we havebetter and worse moments, more concentrated and less concentrated,more awake and less awake.MISS M . Can one think of money-making on a very large scale—thescale of the multi-millionaire—as a special kind of activity?MR. O. This is an imaginary example. It will not help.MISS M . Can one think of different parts of centres in connection withtrying to classify different kinds of activities?MR. O. Not different parts of centres, no. In connection with centresyou can say this: that one kind of activity can be made with one centre.One centre, if it works right, is sufficient. Generally speaking, parts ofcentres mean only good work or bad work. Then there is another kindof activity for which more than one centre is necessary. This is thedifference between two particular kinds of activity.MISS M . Some time ago Mr. O. said that we should make a mentalimage of self-remembering. When I try to do this, I find it is allthinking and without emotion, so that nothing happens. How can Iunderstand better how to make this mental image?MR. O.
