You see, when I speak about Yogi schools I speakabout Gnana, which means study of mind, and Raja, which meansdevelopment of consciousness. Bhakti is the best way to bring Fakir tohigher levels. Karma Yoga is necessary in all ways. In some rare cases,people can get something through Karma Yoga without anything else.MISS D. You don't include Gnana Yoga as essential then?MR. O. Gnana Yoga and Raja Yoga mean Yoga schools. Bhakti andHatha are auxiliary. For some people they may be good.MISS R. Does Bhakti Yoga help one rid oneself of self-will?MR. O. For some people it can be good.MRS. K. How can you tell when you reach higher emotional centre?MR. O. Oh, you cannot be mistaken about higher emotion, about thereal thing, that is. Of course one can always imagine.MR. B Is self-remembering the only way by which the development ofemotional centre comes?MR O. Self-remembering is the only right way. There are schoolswhich begin with functions. But it is dangerous, and it may producewrong results to start with higher emotions.I will give you an example. I think I wrote about it, but I will tellyou. When I made some experiments in Moscow in 1910, I went to St.Petersburg for a few days. We were going on a tram, and passedanother tram. And, although I am very near-sighted, I saw the faces ofpeople on the other tram, at a distance that ordinarily would have beenquite impossible. When we reached a gendarme sitting on a horse I gotoff to see his face close to. It was the same face I had seenMRS. K. How long had you been self-remembering?MR O It is not a question of how longMISS R. Can you also catch what a person, a total stranger, is like bythis higher emotional centre? His habits by something he says?MR. O. I don't know. There are different degrees So that if one
unusual thing happens, you may feel that others will grow withconsciousness.MISS R. You consciously experimented with that; it didn't just happen?MR. O. It was the result of experiment. Things don't happen. Theyhappen only in the ordinary way. Things like that do not happen.MRS. W. If things don't happen, how do you explain cause and effect?MR. O. I see no connection. Cause and effect are ordinary terms. Itmeans something happens to you as a result of your own actions. It isonly a term.MRS. W. The Law of Accident?MR. O. I say ordinary things always happen. We live under the Law ofAccident.MRS. W. I don't understand why we have accidents, as long as you tellus things don't happen.MR. O. It is quite opposite. Everything happens.MR. B. I think the difficulty is a misunderstanding. I think she didn'thear you.MR. O. Yes, yes, these things just don't happen.MRS. W. You said before that nothing happens. . . .MR. B. When you said you saw those faces at a distance, it just didn'thappen. I think the question arose because she didn't heat.MISS R. Can one experiment while self-remembering?MR. O. It was an experiment before I heard of self-remembering—years before.M R . A . Was it given as an example of wrong connection of centres?MR. O. It was given as an example of how you will not doubt actualexperience of higher emotion. But I would not advise experiments,even if you know how. For they can be quite wrong. But you don'tneed to experiment in order to try to remember yourself.MISS R. Can't it also be called clairvoyance?MR. O. If clairvoyance exists, it exists as a function of higher emotionalcentre. One cannot have higher emotional centre functioning if one isnot self-conscious. Long, long ago in France, someone offered a largesum of money to anyone who had clairvoyance enough to see througha sealed envelope. Nobody claimed the money.MISS R. Maybe if one had higher emotional centre developed, onewouldn't be interested in the money or the experiment.MR. O. I don't know.
