certain extent, but not sufficiently; many vibrations will be lost.Organic life catches these vibrations and transfers them to the earth. Inthat sense, mankind, plants and animals all play the same role. Plantscatch a certain kind of vibrations, animals and man catch others, andall serve the same purpose of connecting different parts of the SolarSystem with the earth.Then there is another interesting thing. We are here on the earth, inthis film, under the influence of the moon, under certain influences ofthe planets, under the influence of the sun, under the influence of allsuns and possibly under the influence of all worlds. Certainly theinfluence of all suns and all worlds on individual man is very small.About the influence of the moon we do not know much, but it plays avery important part. So you see everything is connected. Withoutunderstanding how everything is connected with the moon, with theplanets and with the sun, we cannot understand the position of manand the possibility of development and life as it is. When all this istaken into consideration we understand, for instance, one expressionwhich it is impossible to explain without understanding this diagram:that man 'lives in a very bad place in the universe'. Many things whichwe regard as removable and possible to change and against which wefight are really the result of this position of organic life on the earth. Ifwe were on the moon, the position would be still worse. On the earththere is still the possibility of development. Development means thatwe can develop certain parts of us. Suppose planetary influences aresupposed to be responsible for wars and revolutions, but individualman is very little under planetary influences. This part of him that canbe affected is not developed. On the other hand, man physically isunder the influence of the sun, but he can be under a much biggerinfluence if he becomes connected with higher centres. Developmentcomes from passing from one kind of influence to another. We canbecome free from moon's influence and can be under the influence ofplanets, sun, stars.MISS T . Will you explain why higher parts of man are under theinfluence of the sun?MR. O. Remember only one thing: higher and lower means consciousand mechanical. Moon's influence is only mechanical, and only mechanicalparts can respond. Other influences become more and more consciousand we have to become more and more conscious to respond.
You will see later that there is nothing new in it. It is a differentclassification of well known facts.MISS C. Wars and revolutions are caused by the influence of theplanets; what is the effect of the moon?MR. O. The moon is in control of movements. If I move my arm, thisis moon's influence. The moon is like the weight on old-fashionedclocks. All the mechanism works because of this weight. The weightdrags and the mechanism revolves.MISS C. Why is it that the planets can affect man in masses and notindividually?MR. O. That part of man which can be affected by the planets—essence—is either small, undeveloped or mixed with personality. Personalityis not affected, it reflects these influences. Because of this, man livesunder the Law of Accident. If man lived in his essence, he would beunder the law of planetary influences, under the law of fate. Whetherthis would be an advantage or not, that is a question.Essence is hidden in personality. The rays of planetary influencecannot penetrate because personality is accidental, it may be in onestate or in another. In masses, people are affected only in certain partsof themselves, parts which are always there. So planetary influencescan affect masses of people but in normal cases seldom affect individuals.MISS C. Does a crowd have essence and personality?MR. O. A crowd is rather a different thing. The majority of people areNo. 1, men with instinctive and moving centre predominating, andtheir chief motive powers are imagination and imitation. Being in thepower of imagination and imitation they very easily accept some kindof mechanical influence, which is immediately exaggerated by imagination,and begin to copy one another.MR. S. If more people were conscious would there be no wars andrevolutions?MR. O. We must speak about things as they are.MRS. C. If our aim is to develop ourselves, shall we come individuallyunder the influence of the planets? Isn't that a bad thing?MR. O. Bad can only be mechanical. We must forget these words, goodand bad. They can mean only one thing.Individually, the influence will be different according to type, notuniform. Individual man will be influenced according to essence,
