MR. H. How much is known about the development of cells? Forinstance, I have not yet found anything to explain how from a simplecell division all the specialized cells in our body arise.MR. O. That is a special science, embryology. The trouble is that thereis not really a single textbook on embryology which refers to man.They have the most awful habit in scientific books of mixing man withdifferent animals. You begin to read about some kind of tissue and youfind they are speaking about the badger or the rhinoceros!MR. H. Does thought destroy brain cells? I seem to have read somewherethat every time we think we burn up lots of them.MR. O. It is not quite like that, but certainly every activity destroyssomething, needs some kind of energy.MR. H. If this is so, how are they replenished?MR. O. That is one of the enigmas of science. Nobody can answer thatquestion. There is no evidence of the development of brain cells fromother cells; they cannot be immortal and yet they are not born, soreally they do not know what it is that happens.M R . H . What is a large cell and what is a small cell?MR. O. I will not answer that question, because that is one of thethings you can find out for yourself.MR. H. Is the similarity between the structure of the atom and theSolar System analogous in every way, analogous in some degree or notanalogous at all?MR. O. It is very hypothetical. There are certain analogies, but we willspeak about that later.MRS. D. Giving up suffering can only be attained by creating moon inourselves. . . .MR. O. No, there you are mixing up two different ideas. Giving upsuffering is your own action. Creating moon is the result of continuousaction.MRS. D. Man's soul goes to the moon. Man's soul is connected withlife energy. Can these two ideas be connected?MR. O. No.MRS. D. Can I be shown how to create moon in myself?MR. O. First it is necessary to study all that is given—not identifying,remembering yourself, observing, keeping rules. For instance, I findthat nobody knows rules and you want moon. First learn rules.MRS. N. If everything in the universe is so closely interrelated, it is
difficult to see that final death is possible. Would Mr. O. speak aboutthis?MR. O. There is nothing I can say. This is philosophy. Final deathmeans something different from what we call death.MISS D. Mr. O. told us last week that we must think for ourselvesabout the conscious shocks in the organic interval. I have been doingso and trying to find out what I can. It seems to me that one shockmight be connected with the need of constant effort to use higher partsof centres so that energy otherwise wasted in negative emotions mightbe consciously used to stir up and make use of organs now dormant.MR. O. How can you use higher centres? Shocks were more or lessdescribed psychologically; self-remembering will produce the firstshock and the struggle with negative emotions is the beginning of theformation of the second shock. That is all you have to know. Any kindof contact with higher centres will be the result of work, not the workitself.MR. R. I notice that whenever I make a successful effort to overcomesome resistance I have more energy at my disposal for further efforts,if I can manage not to dissipate it in self-satisfaction. Does this energyarise because a certain amount of self-remembering is involved in anyeffort which overcomes a resistance?MR. O. The question is too long. This is an observation. It may bequite good, but it is quite subjective. So to answer your question Iwould have to verify every small point.Questions must be not longer than three lines. I cannot answer longquestions.MR. R Is it only instinctive centre which has to receive impressionscontinuously in order that the organism may remain alive?MR. O. That does not matter at all. Whether I say yes or no, it willchange nothing.MR. R. It seems possible to have both thoughts and emotions whichhave not been aroused by any external impression. Does this mean thatemotional and intellectual centres do not need external impressions toset them working?MR. O. I do not know such things. You take it for granted that I knowwhat you are speaking about. It may be delayed emotion, but how canone expect to get such things when we are entirely in the power ofexternal impressions?
