Before reaching this highest possible degree of intensity they changetheir direction, they fall down. For instance, during last summer,things came to the worst possible situation in Europe, then suddenlythey turned and became better because the danger was an alliance withbolshevism, and this danger nobody avoided, everybody tried to makethis alliance and strengthen it, but something broke and things didn'thappen. This is an example of Law of Octaves, and we will see in thefuture whether things turn in the wrong way; we don't know, but inany case this war with Finland spells necessity of war with bolshevismmore and more. In my presentstate I am fairly sure that if I tried to fight the effects of thisidentification it would be replaced by others which might have evenmore unsettling effects. It is difficult to say; it is necessary to know all of bothpossibilities. It is very dangerous to make a general statement ongeneral principles of that kind.MR. E. Is the idea of 'cheating' to illustrate the working of the law ofcause and effect?MR. O. I don't understand. Cheating of whom and of what?MR. E. In the programme. You said we mustn't try to do the exerciseif one has missed it.MR. O. It has no general meaning. It means if one has missed theexercise one must not do it, nothing else.MISS A . I want to find what it is that makes the difference between abad state and a slightly better one. I have noticed that I can be moreawake when I am feeling tired, or even ill, and that after a good night'ssleep it is more difficult to be aware of myself. In both states I amidentified and negative and lose energy, but in the better state I feelmore alive. In the bad state my thoughts are more difficult to stop, andeffort to work on myself does not last and has very little feeling.MR. O. It is matter for observation; you must have much longer timeto observe and then perhaps you will be able to make some deduction.Generally speaking it is wrong deduction; there may be somethingwrong with the observations themselves, or something is missing,because normally the better you are the more you would be able toremember yourself.MR. T . I have been trying to observe the moment of waking fromphysical sleep for the reason that I thought the dreams of the nightwere carried on in the day-time as turning thoughts. But I find thatdreams are of a quite different order from turning thoughts.MR. O. Quite right.MR. T . The necessity still remains for thoughts to be arrested at themoment of waking, but I find this very difficult. What is the right typeof effort to make?MR. O. I don't know; that is individual. You must try one thing andthen another thing.MR. T . The necessity for continual guard against identification is becomingvery apparent.MR. O. Very good.MR. T . I feel the need of a drastic physical alarm clock, such aspressing something sharp into the palm of the hand.
