The graduate programme in English Literature is designed to train students in the
reading and analysis of literary texts and to introduce them to their literary and
cultural heritage. The Department offers courses investigating a variety of authors,
literary movements, historical periods, critical perspectives, and cultural theories. MA
seminars provide an opportunity to pursue individual interests and to profit from
thesis supervision sessions. About 18 members of the English Department faculty
conduct research in English literature, with coverage of many different fields,
including medieval English literature, poetry and drama of the English Renaissance,
Shakespearean drama and theatre, English Romanticism, the early English novel,
English Modernist literature, post-1950 English novel, war in 20th-century English
literature, social and cultural issues in English literature, and theory of the novel.
