PhD <strong>in</strong> Biological Sciences<br />

Courses aim at tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g students <strong>in</strong> the application of the wide variety of advanced methods<br />

that are used <strong>in</strong> research, which are led by the faculty labs, e.g.: Advanced molecular<br />

cytogenetics; Chromat<strong>in</strong> immunosta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g methods; Plant morphogenesis <strong>in</strong> vivo and <strong>in</strong><br />

vitro; Cyto- and histochemical analysis of embryonic animal tissues; Biomarkers <strong>in</strong> studies<br />

of exposure and effects of xenobiotics <strong>in</strong> the environment; Biotechnology of<br />

microorganisms; Practical bio<strong>in</strong>formatics; Plant functional genomics; Techniques for<br />

biodiversity of soil microorganisms, plants and animals. All courses are taught <strong>in</strong> English.<br />

Be<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> advanced lab techniques and presentation of results <strong>in</strong> English,<br />

students complet<strong>in</strong>g the PhD programme and obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the PhD degree are prepared<br />

to jo<strong>in</strong> research groups at <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> Biotechnology, Biodiversity and<br />

Biology studies, both <strong>in</strong> basic and applied sciences.<br />

EU/EFTA citizens apply<strong>in</strong>g on a regular basis – no fees;<br />

Non-EU/EFTA citizens: 4 000 EUR per year; 200 EUR – application fee.<br />

− CV;<br />

− diploma of a MSc or equivalent degree with supplement;<br />

− letter of recommendation from a faculty member and his or her declaration of<br />

will<strong>in</strong>gness to become the supervisor;<br />

− declaration of the future supervisor on the availability of the funds necessary to<br />

conduct the research project by the PhD student;<br />

− synopsis of the research project that will lead to a doctoral degree;<br />

− list of the candidate’s publications and conference presentations;<br />

− certificate of foreign language competence;<br />

− three ID photos;<br />

− declaration on candidate’s will<strong>in</strong>gness to participate <strong>in</strong> the UPGOW project (task 23);<br />

− agreement for the candidate’s personal data to be processed with<strong>in</strong> the UPGOW project.<br />

Students are entitled to apply for scholarships funded by the UPGOW project (tasks 23<br />

or 55) as well as by the Rector of the University of Silesia (<strong>in</strong> the case of Polish citizens).<br />

From 2009 to 2013 the studies are f<strong>in</strong>ancially supported by the UPGOW project at the<br />

University of Silesia with<strong>in</strong> the ESF funds.<br />
