PhD <strong>in</strong> Physics<br />

PhD studies are designed on the one hand to provide a strong ground<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> highly<br />

specialized areas of modern physics and on the other hand to give students the<br />

opportunity to develop <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary skills. All of this is provided by a series of postgraduate<br />

courses and frequent sem<strong>in</strong>ars <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary environment of the<br />

Institute of Physics. By active participation <strong>in</strong> the group sem<strong>in</strong>ars the PhD students can<br />

learn the art of scientific presentation. They can choose a supervisor from many senior<br />

staff scientists and are fully <strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>in</strong> the research program of the Institute. PhD<br />

students have been co-authors of approx. 30% of the recent journal papers published<br />

by the academic staff of the Institute. The research covers a broad range of currently<br />

developed areas <strong>in</strong>: condensed matter physics (experimental and theoretical),<br />

molecular physics, nuclear physics, elementary particle physics, statistical physics,<br />

astrophysics and cosmology, medical physics, physics of nano- and mesoscopic<br />

systems, computer physics. The dissertation for the degree of PhD shall normally be<br />

completed and defended with<strong>in</strong> 4 years.<br />

EU/EFTA citizens apply<strong>in</strong>g on a regular basis – no fees;<br />

Non-EU/EFTA citizens: 4 000 EUR per year;<br />

200 EUR – application fee.<br />
