Bioinformatics interdisciplinary curriculum covers the practical applications of
computer science to explore databases holding genetic and related structural data of
biomolecules. It is shortening the research and development cycles of drugs,
biocatalysts, biosensors and other products of modern biotechnology. The
bioinformatics at Wroclaw University of Technology evolved from computational
chemistry curriculum activated in autumn 1995. It is formally designed as
a specialization of the regular biotechnology curriculum. The graduation document
certifies the degree in biotechnology with the notification of a deepened
specialization in bioinformatics. Study for applicants without engineering degree
study lasts 2 years, otherwise 1.5 years only.
Content: A focus of bioinformatics in the main study consists of at least 20 units,
12 of which have to be covered as lectures. The remaining 8 units are labs and
seminars. In addition 8 optional units are offered covering also Polish culture and
language courses. Students without engineering degree are required to take
additional 1st semester with 9 units covering engineering and technology courses.
