Bio<strong>in</strong>formatics <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary curriculum covers the practical applications of<br />

computer science to explore databases hold<strong>in</strong>g genetic and related structural data of<br />

biomolecules. It is shorten<strong>in</strong>g the research and development cycles of drugs,<br />

biocatalysts, biosensors and other products of modern biotechnology. The<br />

bio<strong>in</strong>formatics at Wroclaw University of Technology evolved from computational<br />

chemistry curriculum activated <strong>in</strong> autumn 1995. It is formally designed as<br />

a specialization of the regular biotechnology curriculum. The graduation document<br />

certifies the degree <strong>in</strong> biotechnology with the notification of a deepened<br />

specialization <strong>in</strong> bio<strong>in</strong>formatics. <strong>Study</strong> for applicants without eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g degree<br />

study lasts 2 years, otherwise 1.5 years only.<br />

Content: A focus of bio<strong>in</strong>formatics <strong>in</strong> the ma<strong>in</strong> study consists of at least 20 units,<br />

12 of which have to be covered as lectures. The rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 8 units are labs and<br />

sem<strong>in</strong>ars. In addition 8 optional units are offered cover<strong>in</strong>g also Polish culture and<br />

language courses. Students without eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g degree are required to take<br />

additional 1st semester with 9 units cover<strong>in</strong>g eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and technology courses.<br />
