The American Studies Center is a cross-discipl<strong>in</strong>ary department of the University of<br />

Warsaw. Its faculty research and teach various aspects of the United States culture,<br />

society, literature, art, film, media, history, economy, politics, law, ideas, etc. Faculty are<br />

both Polish and <strong>in</strong>ternational scholars; permanent faculty <strong>in</strong>cludes three professors from<br />

the U.S. Classes are taught by the Center's faculty and guest faculty. Graduates of the<br />

American Studies Center have specialized knowledge about American society and<br />

culture, and the relations between the U.S. and the world, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Europe. The secondcycle<br />

studies program encompasses <strong>in</strong>troductory lectures to the various discipl<strong>in</strong>es that<br />

make up the curriculum, and a wide spectrum of electives; students are encouraged to<br />

enroll <strong>in</strong> elective classes which would <strong>in</strong>form their specific research projects. The<br />

program <strong>in</strong>cludes also a writ<strong>in</strong>g prosem<strong>in</strong>ar, master sem<strong>in</strong>ars, and other types of classes.<br />

The program runs for two years (four terms). The extramural programs (the weekday one<br />

and the weekend one) are tuition based. Some students <strong>in</strong> the weekday program do not<br />

pay tuition; this exemption is based on entrance exam scores. However, only Polish<br />

nationals, other EU and EFTA nationals are eligible for this exemption. The curriculum is<br />

the same for the non-pay<strong>in</strong>g and the pay<strong>in</strong>g students. The pay<strong>in</strong>g students have the<br />

option of choos<strong>in</strong>g between the weekday and the weekend programs. The non-pay<strong>in</strong>g<br />

students are admitted only <strong>in</strong>to the weekday program. The weekday program offers<br />

classes from Monday through Thursday. In the weekend program, classes are taught every<br />

second weekend on Friday afternoons, Saturdays and Sundays. The number of class<br />

hours is at least 80 percent of the number of hours taught <strong>in</strong> the weekday program.<br />

EU and EFTA citizens – 5600 PLN per academic year (only for part-time studies, fulltime<br />

studies are free off tuition fee); Non EU and EFTA citizens - 4000 EUR per<br />

academic year.<br />

Licencjat, magister (B.A., M.A.) or equivalent.<br />

Eligible for admission are holders of a B.A., M.A., or other equivalent degree <strong>in</strong> any<br />

discipl<strong>in</strong>e. Entrance exam is made up of two tests: Scholastic Aptitude and Knowledge<br />

about the U.S. Both tests are <strong>in</strong> English. The Scholastic Aptitude Test aims at test<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the candidate’s ability to understand texts <strong>in</strong> English. It tests for both l<strong>in</strong>guistic<br />

competence and the ability to th<strong>in</strong>k logically. The Knowledge about the U.S. Test<br />

checks the candidate’s knowledge of U.S. history, geography, politics and culture.<br />
