The programme provides the basic skills necessary for research <strong>in</strong> an academic<br />

environment as well as <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry. Computer science and mathematics form the<br />

theoretical foundations for a major part of bio<strong>in</strong>formatics, us<strong>in</strong>g methods from<br />

subdiscipl<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g discrete mathematics, theoretical computer science, logic,<br />

artificial <strong>in</strong>telligence, probability theory, mathematical statistics, database design,<br />

programm<strong>in</strong>g, optimization theory, simulation and visualization methods. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

two-year master’s studies students acquire knowledge about such problems as<br />

computer systems modell<strong>in</strong>g and analysis, programm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrated environments,<br />

and image process<strong>in</strong>g. Graphical methods – like visualisation and modell<strong>in</strong>g are tools<br />

that assist <strong>in</strong> analyz<strong>in</strong>g and visualiz<strong>in</strong>g biomedical data. In the f<strong>in</strong>al study year students<br />

prepare their master’s theses and on pass<strong>in</strong>g the master’s exam<strong>in</strong>ation they are<br />

granted a master’s degree <strong>in</strong> computer science.<br />

The implementation of this new field of study (established <strong>in</strong> accordance with the<br />

latest trends <strong>in</strong> the development of computer science) aims to prepare specialists with<br />

a multidiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary education who will f<strong>in</strong>d careers <strong>in</strong> the sphere of both biological<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutions and <strong>in</strong>formatics centres.<br />

EU/EFTA citizens apply<strong>in</strong>g on a regular basis – no fees;<br />

Non-EU/EFTA citizens: 3500 EUR per year;<br />

200 EUR – application fee.<br />

Candidates will be accepted on the basis of records of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree<br />

<strong>in</strong> Computer Science or related fields of study. Full list of the required documents is<br />

available on the university’s website.<br />

Open<strong>in</strong>g of the programme depends on the number of candidates.<br />
