The oldest and the largest theatre school <strong>in</strong> <strong>Poland</strong>; the only which provides students<br />

with both practical and theoretical education. It was established <strong>in</strong> 1932 as State<br />

Institute of Theatrical Arts (PIST). Its first headmaster and dean of the Act<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Department was Aleksander Zelwerowicz. In 1996 accord<strong>in</strong>g to the bill of the Polish<br />

Parliament the official name was changed <strong>in</strong>to the Aleksander Zelwerowicz Theatre<br />

Academy. Students from different years and departments are given the opportunity to<br />

lead and accomplish common practices and artistic projects. The curriculum on every<br />

department undergoes permanent modofications <strong>in</strong> order to provide its graduates with<br />

the knowlegde and skills needed <strong>in</strong> variable world of theatre and the new media.<br />

International cooperation<br />

As for the <strong>in</strong>ternational activity, first of all, the school organizes the International<br />

Theatre Schools Festival (2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009) and the International Festival<br />

of Puppetry Theatre Schools (2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010). Around 15 schools, not<br />

only from Europe, but also from all over the world (Israel, Japan, Ch<strong>in</strong>a, Mexico,<br />

Australia, the US) participated <strong>in</strong> each of those. The Academy takes part <strong>in</strong> several<br />

exchange programs: bilateral ones (Polish - Japanese Drama Academy, cooperation<br />

with St. Petersburg Academy) and multilateral ones (Teatro Figura Europa Cultura<br />

2000), as well as the research<strong>in</strong>g progammes (Inter}Artes). The school's teachers and<br />

students participate <strong>in</strong> all important theatre festivals (among others Istropolitana Project<br />

<strong>in</strong> Bratislava, Festival Setkání/Encounter <strong>in</strong> Brno, "S<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g Mask" <strong>in</strong> Sa<strong>in</strong>t Petersburg).<br />

The Academy is a member of the European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA). It<br />

also participates <strong>in</strong> student exchange program Erasmus.<br />
