Recommendati<strong>on</strong> 6-24: The government should amend <strong>the</strong> Educati<strong>on</strong> Act to give power to<br />

<strong>the</strong> minister to order <strong>the</strong> sale <strong>of</strong> closed schools or o<strong>the</strong>r unused properties, especially when<br />

such dispositi<strong>on</strong>s could meet o<strong>the</strong>r needs in <strong>the</strong> broader public sector.<br />

Recommendati<strong>on</strong> 6-25: The province should no l<strong>on</strong>ger provide top-up funding to<br />

underutilized sec<strong>on</strong>dary schools if <strong>the</strong>se schools could instead accommodate some or all <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Grade 7 and 8 students in <strong>the</strong>ir catchment area.<br />

Recommendati<strong>on</strong> 6-26: To mitigate fur<strong>the</strong>r increases, <strong>the</strong> province should, in future<br />

discussi<strong>on</strong>s with <strong>the</strong> Ontario Teachers’ Federati<strong>on</strong>, reject fur<strong>the</strong>r employer rate increases to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Teachers’ Pensi<strong>on</strong> Plan bey<strong>on</strong>d <strong>the</strong> current rate, and instead examine which benefits<br />

could be reduced prospectively to make <strong>the</strong> Plan more affordable and benchmark any<br />

changes to <strong>the</strong> provisi<strong>on</strong>s c<strong>on</strong>tained in o<strong>the</strong>r plans.<br />

Recommendati<strong>on</strong> 6-27: The government should work in a co-ordinated fashi<strong>on</strong> to discuss<br />

supply planning and, in particular, <strong>the</strong> overproducti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> teachers, with Ontario’s<br />

13 universities <strong>of</strong>fering teacher educati<strong>on</strong> programs. Attempts should be made to direct<br />

teacher educati<strong>on</strong> spaces to areas <strong>of</strong> greater need, especially in light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> staffing changes<br />
