111 - <strong>The</strong> Philosophical Systems<br />

non-eternal is not a product like ether (ākāśa), the capacity of being<br />

made and of appearing as a product are features which are found in<br />

the pakṣa as well as in the sapakṣa, but are not found in the vipakṣa.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se constitute the hētu or the reason for the character of being<br />

non-eternal.<br />

This is what is expounded almost in the same terms in the<br />

Nyāyapravēśa; liṅgasyatrairūpyam, the middle term must possess<br />

three characteristics, namely,<br />

(1) the whole of the minor term, Pakṣa, must be connected with the<br />

middle term as in the example.<br />

Sound is non-eternal<br />

Because it is a product like a pot,<br />

But unlike ether (ākāśa).<br />

In this, product, which is the middle term, contains the whole of<br />

sound, which is the minor term.<br />

(2) All things denoted by the middle term must be homogeneous with<br />

things denoted by the major term, as in the example, all things<br />

produced are non-eternal, as a pot.<br />

(3) None of the things heterogeneous from the major term must be a<br />

thing denoted by the middle term, as in the example, nothing that is<br />

not non-eternal is a product as ether.<br />

Valid<br />

ṣṭānta is of two kinds, either homogeneous (sādharmya) or<br />

heterogeneous (vaidkarmya). That which is homogeneous is where
