Hence the interpretation that kucchara refers actually to the Gūrjaras
is at the very best doubtful. Very probably the name Gūrjara itself is
derived from a Tamil or Dravidian word kucchara, and this
possibility must be investigated carefully. In any case, it cannot be
held as decisive evidence to prove either that the work is later than
the sixth century because of the occurrence of this expression or that
the expression itself is an interpolation. In any case, with our present
knowledge of this particular question, no decisive inference is
possible. The question, therefore, of the age of Maṇimēkhalai will
have to be decided on other grounds than this.
