Hence the interpretation that kucchara refers actually to the Gūrjaras<br />

is at the very best doubtful. Very probably the name Gūrjara itself is<br />

derived from a Tamil or Dravidian word kucchara, and this<br />

possibility must be investigated carefully. In any case, it cannot be<br />

held as decisive evidence to prove either that the work is later than<br />

the sixth century because of the occurrence of this expression or that<br />

the expression itself is an interpolation. In any case, with our present<br />

knowledge of this particular question, no decisive inference is<br />

possible. <strong>The</strong> question, therefore, of the age of <strong>Maṇimēkhalai</strong> will<br />

have to be decided on other grounds than this.
