them <strong>and</strong> how resistant populations can grow.<br />

The overuse of antibiotics in both human medicine <strong>and</strong> animal agriculture has<br />

contributed to the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. For example, taking<br />

antibiotics for an illness caused by a virus, such as the common cold or the flu, won’t<br />

make you better <strong>and</strong> just gives harmful bacteria chances to evolve resistance. Historically,<br />

antibiotics were also routinely given to food production animals to make them fatter, <strong>and</strong><br />

that allowed for the growth of antibiotic resistance. As of 2017, the FDA ruled that antibiotics<br />

can no longer be used for growth promotion in animal agriculture, a significant step in<br />

reducing the overuse of these drugs that are important to both humans <strong>and</strong> animals. Data
