WHAT’S THAT CLAIM?<br />

In addition to the FDA-required information on food labels, it’s common for them to be<br />

peppered with claims about the nutrient content of the food <strong>and</strong> the purported health<br />

benefits of eating it. These claims are marketing tools for food manufacturers, <strong>and</strong> they’re<br />

regulated by the FDA in an effort to ensure that they give the consumer accurate, sciencebased<br />

information about the food. Let’s look at the different types of claims that you’ll find<br />

on food packages.
