opportunities for non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT); that is, find ways to increase<br />

movement throughout the day.<br />

• Prioritize physical education <strong>and</strong> recess time in schools. In addition to helping kids<br />

stay healthy, movement also helps them learn.<br />

• Make neighborhoods safer <strong>and</strong> more accessible for walking, cycling, <strong>and</strong> playing.<br />

• When safe, encourage kids to walk or bike to school.<br />

• Build family <strong>and</strong> community activities around physical activity, such as trips to the<br />

park, walks together, <strong>and</strong> community walking <strong>and</strong> exercise groups.<br />

• Facilitate more movement in the workday by encouraging walking meetings,<br />

movement breaks, <strong>and</strong> treadmill desks.<br />

• Find ways to move that are enjoyable to you <strong>and</strong> fit your life. Yard work, walking<br />

your dog, playing tag with your kids, <strong>and</strong> going out dancing all count!<br />
