Editorial
This publication is a collection of running projects in German universities to set
up an integrated information management and to improve the cooperation of the
institutions, which are providing the academic support on the field of information,
communication and media services. In each case the contributions are demonstrating
different patterns of organisation and services, various starting points and approaches
and altogether a broad diversity of successful activities and ongoing problems,
which characterize the present developments of the service and support organisation
in German universities. As well it becomes evident, that the mostly
quite traditional support structures of German universities are in motion. To present
these developments also to an international public every contribution is translated
in English. Just in the universities in the United Kingdom and the United
States this topic is very present under the keyword „convergence‟ since many
years. From that there can be reviewed a more considerable and longer period of
experiences and developments. Therefore the many different examples given in the
contributions are including the opportunity to exchange and/or to exploit the national
and international experiences. If these chances could be stimulated by the
volume published now, the further developments of the activities and structures to
provide German universities with information, communication and media services
would be heavily benefited by this.
We have to thank a number of people, who have been involved in the successful
process to publish this volume. First of all we thank the authors for their contributions,
which were written and submitted under the quite eventful circumstances
of the everyday business. As well we are very thankful to Maxi Kindling (student
at the Institute for Library and Information Science of the Humboldt-University in
Berlin) to have made available the selected bibliography and Hans-Jörg Ullmann
(staff member of the Information, Communication and Media Center of the Brandenburg
Technical University of Cottbus) for all the work to prepare the final version
of the whole document. Last but not least we thank our publisher
Bock+Herchen for the readiness to take the printed version of the publication in his
program and for all the kind and open-eyed assistance. The electronic version of
this volume is available as an open-access-publication under www.dini.de provided
by the German Initiative for Network Information (Deutsche Initiative für Netzwerkinformation
/ DINI).
