EP3: Image archive for photos and graphics
This subproject deals with the development of an administration database
to be operated via the university‟s intranet. This database is intended
to take the place of a number of archives of individual institutions that contain
photos for research and publishing purposes, e.g., the rector‟s photo
archive, the photo archive of the university‟s central institution for advanced
training (Zentrum für Weiterbildung und Wissenstransfer – ZWW ),
the photo archive of the university‟s department for public relations or the
university library‟s photo archive. Individual chairs, research groups and
other institutions also store photos for purposes of research and office tasks.
In order to move away from isolated applications and offline storage (CD-
ROM, DVD), it is necessary to include all the groups mentioned and to
initiate a convincing gateway solution. This solution shall be standardised
as far as it is necessary, but shall at the same time offer all participants the
possibility to select from a wide range of options what is best suited for
their purposes (e.g.,options concerning depth of indexing). What must be
developed are procedures for input, storage, retrieval and output. An export
module shall facilitate the use of photos in publications.
EP4: Automation of data services
This subproject shall make it easier for academic staff and students to
deal with bibliographic data gleaned from database searches. It is also
meant to assist academic staff in using the research bibliography edited by
the university library and in supplying data for this bibliography; in addition,
data from the bibliography shall be made available for scholarly purposes.
As to the first proposal, databases for personal bibliographic managament
were beginning to appear on the horizon when the application was
first filed. Today, the market already offers some such products, some of
which are known to users who take an interest. The ITS sets great store by
testing these products with users and making the products available if required,
but only by way of a central solution for the benefit of all participants.
What is necessary are the working out of clear licensing policies and
the building up of introductory support from the university‟s own resources
(online tutorials, teaching materials etc.)
The university bibliography demands quite substantial editorial work.
