5.2.2 Web-based Database Applications (Portals)
This sub-project will set up web-based portals for different user groups
within the University of Oldenburg. The portals are to integrate information
systems that are already established at the university, and offer individualized
access. A single-sign-on procedure for different systems paired with
an adequate role concept for the task-specific granting of privileges is to
create personalized, custom made access to the information and services
offered. The Central Authentication Service (CAS) provides this capability.
Following a detailed evaluation, the open-source solution Liferay was
selected and prototypically implemented. Architecture and technology meet
current international standards.
The portals for different user groups and different functions will be implemented
incrementally, in a first phase for students, in a second phase for
teaching and research as well as for the administration.
The premature cessation of the project‟s funding led to a reorientation of
the priorities in the portals‟ implementations: the portal software in combination
with the identity management will now serve as an integrated access
point to the most important services for study and teaching including the
advantages of the single-sign-on architecture.
Already at the beginning of the i³-sic! project, faculties and central administration
confronted IBIT with requirements resulting from the change to
Bachelor and Master structures in all study programs. IBIT quickly had to
put into operation a number of web-based database applications:
– Examination administration: registration via Stud.IP, result input,
interface between Stud.IP and HIS-POS
– Course planning: description of modules, scheduling of courses
without overlaps, integration of the module database into the courseplanning
system (Lehrveranstaltungsplaner, LVP)
– Course evaluation: questionnaire in Stud.IP, aggregated evaluations
in SAP/R3
– Accreditation process: registration via the HIS-QIS module ZUL.
A need to act had arisen in Oldenburg already before the standard software
was supplied by HIS, e.g. for the registration for exams in the winter 05/06
in all teacher-training study programs.
