debate was initiated in the autumn of 1995 with the staging of a colloquium
entitled: “The Library of the Future – Planning an Information and Communications
Centre at Berlin Adlershof 1 ”.
4. Strategic golas and guidelines
Thirteen theses formed the basis and subject of the colloquium discussion,
three of which express the central idea most clearly:
“The IKA planning must consider the potential and services offered by a
state-of-the-art information and communications system as well as the resulting
requirements profiles of its diverse users. In both its objectives and
structure, the centre must take into account basic developments in the fields
of electronic data management, data traffic in networks, and electronic
publishing. It must be conceived in such a way that it can play an active
role, as a procurer and provider of information provider, both at the scientific
and commercial location and outside its boundaries too, i.e. worldwide.”

A wide variety of approaches were presented in close co-operation with
nationally and internationally recognised scientists and experienced practitioners.
This ultimately led to the formulation of guidelines that were subsequently
published in a booklet to accompany the opening of the information
and communications centre, which was named after the Nobel Prizewinner
Erwin Schrödinger:
“The traditional services of a scientific library and the development of
electronically-assisted forms of information supply will be extensively
linked with the tasks of a university computer centre, which – using the
