also serve as a forum for discussion between faculties and are decentralized
points of contact for interested colleagues and faculties.
The central information service providers provide services for the
whole university. Where services require more than one provider, the central
information service providers take on the tasks appropriate to their core
competencies. This is coordinated and checked by the CIO for Scholarly
Information.
One goal of the new management structure is the increased involvement
of decentralized service providers (e.g. media laboratories in faculties) in
order to be able to offer integrated service packages. Where services require
more than one provider, they take on the tasks which lie within the
areas of their specific competencies (subject-based, teaching, technical etc.)
– for which they are reimbursed proportionally. In order to be included in
the university-wide service catalogue, decentralized service providers must
adhere to defined common quality standards, and must guarantee contractually
to provide services beyond their own faculty.
Faculties and departments, with the support of the CIO, formulate their
specific requirements and needs. On the basis of this, a service catalogue is
created, which is based on minimal standards for quality and quantity.
6.3. Current State of Implementation
The management structure described above has been implemented in
certain example areas. Key areas include infrastructural support of the
changes in academic publishing (particularly “Open Access”), as well as
the use of new media in teaching. The systematic development and provision
of a service catalogue remains to be implemented. Individual building
blocks are already in place.
Currently the following projects are in progress:
– Development and consolidation of an institution-wide service catalogue
– Extension of the university‟s e-scholarship repository (which exclusively
contains peer-reviewed postprints of authors at Bielefeld)
