Study and teaching will be primarily supported by IT applications in the
area of multi-media services and by university administration software
applications. The development of a multi-media teaching and learning centre
will create satisfactory preconditions for providing sustainable solutions
at the HU. The focus will be on the use of multi-media and e-learning applications,
such as the university-wide introduction of the Moodle communications
platform with more than 25,000 participant students; on making
available the Mneme object-management system (in which 40,000 objects
are now recorded); and on the project “E-competence in Context”, which
involves the extensive use of e-learning components throughout the university.
For more than four years now, the HU has been running a multi-media
promotion program that is increasingly being used to support teaching using
multi-media methods. What is still needed is a holistic approach that
takes into account the students‟ perspective. The applications used so far
have superficially examined the administration process but ignored the
support given to the students on their “path through the university”.
The CMS provides a number of research-supporting services which research
groups have utilised in various ways and to different degrees. Although
a research database exists that provides an overall view of all the
university‟s research projects, it does not contain any components of the
kind of knowledge management we are striving for. To this end, processes
must be analysed in greater depth and an organisational and technical solution
of very different dimensions planned. Extremely important in this connection
are the endeavours currently being undertaken to develop new services
– on the basis of e-science platforms – for researchers, and to disseminate
them as required. The first steps in the right direction have been
taken with the offers to support electronic publishing and with the “Hyperimage”
project, sponsored by the BMBF, which is creating a communication
platform within the image-based sciences.
